I've had lots of cheap Fiat's, I see the neighbours spending the price of one of my cars every month on credit repayments. The most expensive car I've ever bought was my fiat coupe at £1600
My Lexus land yacht LS400 was £600 and I love that.

As much as I'd love to have a go in true shed spirit and buy anything cheap and roadworthy and run it in to the ground, I think I need to be a bit more selective with the choice to stop myself from changing it too quick & losing money.
IMO bangernomics and relatively quick don't go together. Doesn't matter if the car cost £200 if it does 25MPG and has expensive parts. I find the best thing is to get a car so catastrophically slow that you just don't care about 118d's. If I drive for 60 miles at 75MPH, it takes me 48 minutes to reach my destination (based on no traffic). If I drive at 60, it takes me an hour. Doesn't really bother me taking ten minutes longer on the commute to save more than half of my car costs compared to my Subaru. On the twisty roads, if you're in a light hatchback it's fun to drive while trying to keep your momentum. I have no trouble keeping up with the luxury barges on the tight Northumbrian roads around here.

After my wife has had 5 write offs in 4 yeras I now employ this.
At the moment we have a Fiat 1.9 JTD Estate shopper/ dog car originally, but the engine is so good I now look after it , last week I fitted a worn out pulley £46 I fitted it so cheap enough ,this week I put on 4 tyres £150. Had the car since last September & it was on 108,000 miles ,now on 120+ but this car give me from 57- 71 per gallon .
Somewhere here on here is a pic of the MPG screen showing 69 mpg, that was after a run from Bristol to Hertfordshire & back & had come off the motorway & into Bristol's stop start soup.
I can't find it so here it is again, running around Bristol outskirts (officially the slowest moving traffic in UK)it show 53+mpg...It cost £750 a bargain considering the pummeling it gets.

If you can't do better than this then you don't know how to buy a good one. My Mondeo shed has done 600 miles this week, same as the week before. It will do a similar distance next week, and I won't be any more tired than in anything else. Maintenance required recently? I had to replace 2 tyres. Before that I had to spend £300 to get it sorted out for the MoT in September.I also have a banger MX5. That IS a little tiring on a run but it's an open car. It also needs a new wheel as one is buckled and won't balance properly. This is hardly difficult maintenance.
have been enjoying bangernomics for years more through necessity than love though. Recently brought an old Citroen ZX diesel for £150 and loved it so much, refound my passion for tinkering. Got rid of the modern daily, cleared the finance and invested the couple of hundred left over on a Pug 206 estate. My pair of Frenchies have been totally reliable and great fun.
That's true, we can all buy a lemon. I bought a Vectra that should have been better than it was. I had it for 18 months, by which time it was all but dead and it hadn't been especially good. It broke down for a bad connection to a the ECU, and some months later it handed in a clutch. Within weeks the new clutch slave was leaking, it had a hill of other faults and so I sold it cheap to someone who broke it up. I reckon that between 1 in 10 and 1 in 5 is a poor buy. The other thing you learn is when to walk away from a bad one and cut your losses.

Do you really care about getting "wasted" by someone in a leased 118D? Personally on the motorway I just cruise along. If you're getting beaten by a 118D on a twisty road, then you should learn more about conserving momentum. A crap car on ditch finders is ideal for this. :PI need to be frugal for a while as I have other financial priorities. Could do with selling current daily driver for about 3k, paying a 2k bill and finding something reliable with the change to do while I save up some money.

If you really want to go cheap and fast. Get a bike. I picked up a GSR600 for just over £1k, flew through it's MOT, does 40MPG even though its still not quite running right, and has enough power if you thrash it to overtake most stuff.

I see your point... It would be a lot easier for me to find a nice shed if I wasn't bothered about speed. There's a nice bogey green 106 1.5D I've seen, no pas, no electric anything, £425 notes with a recent cambelt. I just know it would do the job, be reliable and cost buttons to run. I also know that for one reason or other it would be back up for sale a week after buying as I'd be frustrated with the lack of power. Conserving momentum is fun, but being bullied out the way by newer diesel metal just annoys me no end. I can't explain it, it just does. My commute is a mindnumbing 20 miles of dual carriageway. It's dull. So being in the 520 or Clubman is no different to commuting in the Daihatsu Shed. Whatever car I am in I will travel at 60mph to listen to music and chill before and after work. My colleagues in their 1-series will bomb it away from the office at 90mph and I'll catch them up at the main traffic lighted junction halfway along the route. I do this every day and it just doesn't compute in their minds that they gain nothing other than a tiny adrenaline rush.

I do care, it's the most annoying thing having some arrogant twunt in a leased diesel barging you out of the way. And it happens a lot in small cars, I've been driving my mums 1.2 corsa for the last week and I'm already sick of it getting zero respect on the road, dangerous overtakes by other cars when if I was in a 3 series doing the same speed they wouldn't even bother over taking... I see what you mean and it does make shed finding a lot more difficult, I suppose the spirit of running sheds is just to buy anything as long as it's cheap and roadworthy and drive it till it dies, being too specific limits the search somewhat.
Bikes aren't my thing but there's plenty around for next to nothing, you're right!
