Can the guys that sell cars make sense of this for me?

TL;DR - Dealer refused to sell me a car without finance.

I tried to buy a car on Monday - 65 plate Sandero, agreed to pay full price, no part ex and no finance. After about two hours their finance guy comes over and tries to cajole me into taking the finance (apparently he's going out of his way to 'help me'). Gradually becoming more aggressive and then tells me he won't allow me to buy the car without finance.

I assumed he'd eventually give up and let me buy the car, but after about 10 minutes I just had to give up - apologised to the salesman that his time had been wasted due to the finance guy and left.

He claimed that the car was advertised at 'below it's value on our books' so he had to have the finance commission. Given it was a 1 year old pre-reg and that it's replacement 6 month old pre-reg was sat around the back of the lot I'd have thought they'd be happy to sell it.

Plus the finance seemed dodgy, they kept calling it '0% interest' but it was really 'you pay the interest to the finance company and each month we'll pay you the interest back' - given this I don't see how any finance commission could have been worth more than the interest on the finance?

So, is it:
  • I don't understand the economics of car sales
  • They blew the sale
  • I look like an easy mark?
I had that at a branch of a popular car chain in Hull

Thing is, that it was the perfect car and at a good price. So i just went along with their finance crap (to a point, they started off with an APR of 19%!).
The following day, i called black horse and settled during the cooling off period. Problem solved

The screen was wrong. It's a 64 plate in grey right? 1.2 pure tech 110 bhp? It's been in their stock since 26/10/15. He wasn't blagging you at all.

He was incorrect about the sevrvice schedule though.
Haha probably the same one.

Looks like i could have interpreted it wrong. Its a shame then as 9 months un sold has left it with a potentially void warranty and a lot of doubt in a buyers mind. Will no doubt go to auction.

Look through the CEO's of the Fortune 500 and you'll find that most of them are salespeople. Why would you sneer at sales people and imply that they are somehow inferior to accountants and engineers? What do you do that makes you feel so superior?
No, most CEO's at that level will have a background in accountancy/finance. A fundamental understanding of the financial underpinnings of the company/sector is a most desirable quality in a CEO.

Not disagreeing that Sales is a worthy profession though, when done right. It's also something that I wouldn't be able to do, certainly in a pressurized environment, so hats off to those who can.

This is more servicing rather than sales but a certain Ford / Mazda dealer a few years ago tried to charge my mum for regassing the Air-Conditioning on her MX5... Yep, she doesn't have air conditioning...

I was very bored this morning on a train journey and I read this whole thread.

You seem to really take exception to people criticising your line of work... Why? If you're one of the good ones surely it's happy days? You mentioned earlier that you have done well out of it?

Somebody was threatening to start a 'stupid things car buying customers say' thread as if it was going to ruin all the other PHers days... Why not? It's only a bit of fun, surely there are some funny anecdotes to be told and most people on PH will take it in good humour...

I kind of admire the sheer front to try that...

Conversation I had on the Jaguar stand at a US Auto Show a few years ago.

"Yeah they're owned by Ford"

No, they're not.

"They're very unreliable"

No, they just came top in the J D Power survey.

"They're all made in India"

Nope, all made in the UK.

"Yeah they've got BMW engines"

Nope.

"Can I lease one for $300 a month"

Sorry it's my popcorn break now.

If you call it patina you can charge more if it's a classic car. Even more so if it's an old VW

Because they have nothing in their life....pretty sad really.
That's a bit harsh, they do have the joy of selling cars and lying to customers so their life isn't entirely empty.

I went to buy a car for my mistress. As I parked my new LEXUS C200H I noticed the envy of the gaggle of salesmen at the premium car I was able to lease on my five figure salary.

After viewing several cars we found a car that would accommodate my intimidating 5'5 frame, a five year old Fiat Punto. i had been looking at this car for some time and had spent four weeks researching it so that I could impress my hot lady friend.

I asked the salesman if the steel had been pressed in Turin and he didn't know. I laughed out loud, told him I would not be buying the car and walked out the door. The sales manager approached and as I shook his hand I increased the pressure till I heard the bones snap.

Afterwards we went to the local Lexus garage for a coffee to meet like minded enthusiasts.

In fairness
Jaguar were owned by Ford before TATA bought them as Jaguar Land Rover (JLR)
TATA do make cars in India.
As a supplier to JLR I know there are Indian (& Chinese) parts going into their products across the range
JD Powers 2016 survey for reliability doesn't feature a JLR product in the top 50! Infact the XF is the best and it is beaten by numerous Renaults, an Alfa and a Jeep.
BMW did own Land Rover and used their engines
You can lease an XE for £220/month

So some partial truths in most of what your "punter" said
You can't expect them all to have encyclopedic knowledge of the product YOU are selling
I'm sure you know an exhibition stand is more about brand awareness and education

I doubt it. They don't sell Renaults in the USA and Alfa is just making its comeback now. Anyway, I said "a few years ago". Go back a few years and Jag were right up there, even beat Lexus and Porsche for customer satisfaction a couple of times.
