The best drivel to come out of a dealers mouth.

Sat in a Megane, the back of the driver's seat was at 90 degrees to the actual seat. Went to recline it a bit and it wouldn't budge. Salesman then looked me straight in the eye and told me they weren't meant to recline, and that it was pre set in the safest position for driving.
This was a Renault dealer.
Butterface?This was a Renault dealer.

Really? I don't expect the guys in Currys or Maplin to be able to explain to me the benefits of an i7 CPU over an i5 or whether 802.11a is better than 802.11n in a large, concrete walled house. Dealership salespeople are just that; if you really care about what VTEC is, chances are you'll have researched it beforehand and know what it is, in which case why the hell are you asking unless you're an anorak just looking to willy-wave and say 'look how clever I am'? The vast majority of potential buyers give precisely zero fks about what VTEC is and are more preoccupied with concerns about how close they can get the driver's seat to the steering wheel and where they can store the mint imperials in that beige Honda Jazz on the forecourt.
I buy mainly online after doing my own research, that way avoiding dealing with people "trying to help". It's often funny who people in Currys don't know the difference in wifi but can tell you in great detail how much better your picture will be with a £100 HDMI compared to a £10 one!Maybe I'm old fashioned but I expect professionals to know their area of work, I know I get slaughtered when asked a question by Joe Average that they would expect me know know.

There is something weirdly masturbatory about these types of threads. You know more than a salesman about a car and feel the need to create a thread on an Internet forum about how standards have fallen and things aren't as good as they were when you were a nipper and we all holidayed at Butlins, ate strawberries and ice cream not just at Wimbledon and cricket was the national pastime.
Yawn.
A private dealer selling multiple cars I'd agree. A one manufacture franchise I'd hope knows the cars inside and out and in particular the halo model. Yawn.
This whole thread is hilarious.
My recent experience of a local VW dealership was very mixed.
First visit I spoke to a young lady. She told me (lied) that they could not do personal lease deals and said they would have to do it via PCP. Their computer was playing up, so she took my details on a piece of paper and said she would call back in a day or two to book in a test drive. Never called back.
Went into the same dealer two weeks later. Spoke to the principal. Told him I'd been in previously and what had happened, he couldn't find me on the computer. Seems that lady had not bothered entering my details or following up. He asked who it was and I pointed her out.... he said "she's leaving us in a few days to pursue more fitting employment"... so I guess they'd realised she was a waste of oxygen. Organised a test drive for me, and started looking at some figures for lease.
Seat dealer was superb. Two old blokes nursing cups of tea on a Sunday afternoon. Knew all about the models I was interested in. Told them I wanted lease & PCP quotes and what I'd been offered so far. Came back within a day or two to give me their best prices. No messing about and very helpful. Still didn't buy a Seat as I helped a friend replace some glass in a rear passenger door on a 2010 Leon a few weeks ago... the low quality fastenings and complete lack of deadening did not impress.

What you're describing isn't variable valve timing, that is variable valve lift (variable cam profile); variable valve timing is altering when the cam meets the follower during the engine cycle, not how long it is open for, and is usually achieved by changing the cam position relative to the sprocket.
Possibly not, but basic VTEC does give you variable valve timing and lift without variable cam phasing by using two totally separate cam profiles. iVTEC takes that one step further and adds variable can phasing.ThatHalfWelshBloke said:
Variable valve timing activated by an oil pressure sensitive solenoid, which controls locking pins that activates an extended cam-lobe causing the valves to stay open for longer. I didn't need it dumbing down and the lack of technical confidence completely shook our buying experience. In person it sounded as though he was trying to sell us a car with cylinder-deactivation. If it was a turbo-diesel he probably would of told us how quickly it accelerates because of its torque.
I completely take your point though, it was just the primary school delivery of the statement that made it funny / worrying.
I see where you're coming from; pity that, when at primary school, you concentrated too much on engineering and not on learning, for example, the difference between of and have...I completely take your point though, it was just the primary school delivery of the statement that made it funny / worrying.

Yawn.
Have to agree, there's something very odd about it. When shopping with a dealer I'll usually drop in a hint of knowing the technical bits to avoid them embarassing themselves.Yawn.

We're talking about salespeople, not accountants, GPs, engineers, what have you. I think you need to be a tad more realistic with your expectations.

150 years ago, they sold horses,
So not much has changed in the reputability stakes.

Yes, got totally mugged back in January when i purchased a used 533d touring the dealer looked me straight in the eye and said 'Yes you have a warranty, here is your warranty book' when i questioned about turbo cover he then 'phoned' the warranty company and proceeded to have a discussion about it, then agreed they were covered and actually wrote that statement on the sales invoice.
Fast forward 6 months the warranty company have no record of cover from the dealer or any recollection of any discussions. after a few phone calls and the dealer stating again that it was all sorted and was a 'clerical error on his part', warranty company still state there is no cover, Dealer has consistantly lied to me and has taken the money for the cover and pocketed it. I'm totally fed up with chasing them now, so if you're buying a used car from anywhere near Castlepoint in Bournemouth area, be warned.
