My recent experience of a local VW dealership was very mixed.
First visit I spoke to a young lady. She told me (lied) that they could not do personal lease deals and said they would have to do it via PCP. Their computer was playing up, so she took my details on a piece of paper and said she would call back in a day or two to book in a test drive. Never called back.
Went into the same dealer two weeks later. Spoke to the principal. Told him I'd been in previously and what had happened, he couldn't find me on the computer. Seems that lady had not bothered entering my details or following up. He asked who it was and I pointed her out.... he said "she's leaving us in a few days to pursue more fitting employment"... so I guess they'd realised she was a waste of oxygen. Organised a test drive for me, and started looking at some figures for lease.
Seat dealer was superb. Two old blokes nursing cups of tea on a Sunday afternoon. Knew all about the models I was interested in. Told them I wanted lease & PCP quotes and what I'd been offered so far. Came back within a day or two to give me their best prices. No messing about and very helpful. Still didn't buy a Seat as I helped a friend replace some glass in a rear passenger door on a 2010 Leon a few weeks ago... the low quality fastenings and complete lack of deadening did not impress.
So you sourced the VW from the crap dealership then?First visit I spoke to a young lady. She told me (lied) that they could not do personal lease deals and said they would have to do it via PCP. VW dealer salesman told me swirl marks on a black car in the showroom came "mixed in" with the paint from the factory.
He also told me, on taking the V5C for the car we were p/xing, that we could completely forget about it now. I pointed out the bit on the slip that says you should look out for the acknowledgement and he waved that away. I took the slip back off him and he got huffy.
Another VW dealer salesman, 10 yrs with Mercedes and then VW, insisted, even after I explained it to him, that we would be the owners of a car we were getting on PCP.
Not really a sales thing (I agree with others that I wouldn't expect salesmen to know technical stuff) but it's ridiculous that no one that you can get to in a dealership or VW UK seems to understand how their DPF regeneration works.

Yes, got totally mugged back in January when i purchased a used 533d touring the dealer looked me straight in the eye and said 'Yes you have a warranty, here is your warranty book' when i questioned about turbo cover he then 'phoned' the warranty company and proceeded to have a discussion about it, then agreed they were covered and actually wrote that statement on the sales invoice.
Fast forward 6 months the warranty company have no record of cover from the dealer or any recollection of any discussions. after a few phone calls and the dealer stating again that it was all sorted and was a 'clerical error on his part', warranty company still state there is no cover, Dealer has consistantly lied to me and has taken the money for the cover and pocketed it. I'm totally fed up with chasing them now, so if you're buying a used car from anywhere near Castlepoint in Bournemouth area, be warned.

We went to look for a new car for my sister
She's got 3 kids so my dad decided a focus estate would be a good choice.
Ask dealer what they have around 2013/14 with lowish mileage, 1.6 petrol focus estate (colour doesn't matter)
His reply.....Ooooh you'll be lucky. A focus estate is a rare car, especially in petrol.
Yeah right, have you looked on autotrader, it's a focus ffs, there's hundreds of them

"Professionals"?
We're talking about salespeople, not accountants, GPs, engineers, what have you. I think you need to be a tad more realistic with your expectations.
True, folks sell cars for money. We're talking about salespeople, not accountants, GPs, engineers, what have you. I think you need to be a tad more realistic with your expectations.
150 years ago, they sold horses,
So not much has changed in the reputability stakes.
Btw did I mention the lucky heather?

132 meeting those criteria, when I looked. So the number of cars for sale is about a quarter of the number of UK Ford dealers, it's not that surprising he doesn't see them very often. She's got 3 kids so my dad decided a focus estate would be a good choice.

Everytime I've been into a VW dealership by me they've never followed up. Went in about buying a brand new Polo GTI earlier this year, salesman took all my details etc to arrange for test drive and details, to this day I've still never heard anything back..First visit I spoke to a young lady. Toyota dealer when looking at a learner car for my son, I asked why I would buy a toyota over a 107 or C1, becasue its a better car came the reply, I asked in what where is a car with a different badge on better than an otherwise pretty much identical one ?
He lifted the bonnet and sowed me the Toyota logo stamped into the Exhaust manifold heat shield, I then started laughing a bit, he said that the others dont get that engine, the Toyota one, I said that the other models have the exact same bore, stroke, power output, capacity, torque etc but are a different engine ? yes, and not as good apparently, not as good on fuel, not as reliable as the Toyota one.
He then said that the Aygo is made of "thicker steel", much stronger and better in an accident, the Citroen will just fold in half where the Toyota will take a much harder impact without deforming to the same degree.
I had just shown my hand as knowing some quite in depth detail about the cars, but he persisted with trying to say that the Aygo is somehow superiors,he could have said residuals, looks (subjective and who cares on a little supermini), local dealers, trim, spec and paint differences (they had different cloth) but he went on treating me like a dhead.

We visited a local ford dealer who had a used Focus with a heated screen. The screen had a big stone chip dead straight in front of the drivers eye line. I asked what they'd do about it if we bought it as it was an mot failure and the salesman said we should just buy it and claim on our insurance. Then bring it back for an MOT.

There is something weirdly masturbatory about these types of threads. You know more than a salesman about a car and feel the need to create a thread on an Internet forum about how standards have fallen and things aren't as good as they were when you were a nipper and we all holidayed at Butlins, ate strawberries and ice cream not just at Wimbledon and cricket was the national pastime.
Yawn.
Have to agree, there's something very odd about it. When shopping with a dealer I'll usually drop in a hint of knowing the technical bits to avoid them embarassing themselves.Yawn.
It's sometimes easy to forget how little some people have going on in their lives.
When looking for a lease car, my other half was convinced that the q50 infiniti (japanese mercedes) was a great deal and so I enquired about a 48 test drive. I figured that she would hate it after 2 days.
The dealer from Birmingham called me up and told me that he could only do a 30 minute test drive as if everyone had a 48 test drive, they would run out of cars.

Did you expect them to give you a nuts and bolts description or something along the lines of 'when the warning flashes up on the dash, take it for a long drive'?Or if you already knew the answer why did you ask them?

In this day and age, why do people walk in to a dealership and ask if they have a specific 2nd hand car in stock? Surely you look on Autotrader, find a few you like the look of then visit the dealerships where they're located. She's got 3 kids so my dad decided a focus estate would be a good choice.
