This being a Michelin I was disappointed with what's happened, plenty of tread left on it, how many miles left in it?

How old is it?
Look for the four digit code on the sidewall.

In the words of Michael Jackson "it's bad".

That looks like it's been sat for some time under-inflated, and the sun has got to it.

Yeah that's definitely past its best. It's probably not going to blow up in the next hundred yards, but I'd be replacing it as soon as is reasonably possible.

What's the DoT code? It really shouldn't be cracking like that unless it's pretty old and has spent most of its life in the sun.

It's old/been run underinflated.

Would not trust on long motorway jaunts, where the heat could cause failure.

Wasn't it "I'm bad"? Or are you thinking of a different Michael Jackson? wink

Yep age and sun damage, possibly under-inflation too. Could also be it's been treated with some cheap and nasty tyre dressing on the sidewalls as some of the dodgier ones are bad for tyres.

Looks pretty damaged, wouldn't trust that myself.

A set of Michelins I had on my Golf some years ago went like that, despite me not running them under-inflated and it being used as a daily commuter.

I've not gone back to Michelin. Bridgestone, Contis, Yokohama and Falken since then - no complaints with the others.

Thanks for your comments all, I have taken the advice and swapped it with the spare whilst arranging a replacement. This tyre cost £60 about 8 years ago, and the replacement looks like it's going to be only £57, so it's a no-brainer I suppose.
Also took some more photos when it was off, and found the problem mad It was made in Italy!!

week 33, 2007. So nearly 10 year old rubber. Past its best, if not strictly "illegal"

Yeah that's well past most manufacturers' recommended age limit. They usually say something like 5 or 7 years.

That is getting on - and as many a (surprised) parent will tell you rubber doesn't last forever!

I'd change that just for peace of mind!

That's a dead tyre. Not strictly "illegal" but a clear MOT fail IMO.

I changed the Michelin's on the front of my Merc at 6yrs as they went like that. They were only about half worn.

I've seen much worse on newer Dunlop's but they wear much faster than Michelin's. Conti's are renowned for cracking too.
