Is there a new Land Rover sportscar in the pipeline that I've missed?
Sounds hugely optimistic to me. They'll IMO keep on churning out lumbering lumps of Gucci'd-up SUVs until the cows come home. If any of that lot do another sportscar it'll be Jaguar, which seems doubtful with F-type a slow seller.[/quote
You really don't like SUVs do you ?
You really do like to look down on people who don't own a "sports car" don't you ?
For what it's worth I wouldn't consider any of the Discoveries we have owned nor our current FFRR to be in any way "Guccied up", to use your sneering term. They are in fact very good cars fit for all kinds of purposes and make a great compliment to other cars which are very much fit for their own purposes and occasions.
Why do people, especially on PH, have to be so blinkered and downright rude about other people's choices ? The defaults"it's not a "sports car" so you can't be a bonafide Petrol/Piston head line is a particularly small minded trait.

Not heard of the SVR then? Thats plenty enough sports car for most people.Sounds hugely optimistic to me. They'll IMO keep on churning out lumbering lumps of Gucci'd-up SUVs until the cows come home. I expect he has and will either A) be along to make a sweeping generalisation laden with Clarkson-lite invective soon or B) won't return to this thread again having had his daily dose of " I drive a sports car don't you know " string back gloved keyboard showmanship. My money is on the latter as with many people of his sort he's a classic "bait and switch" type i.e. drop in say some inflammatory nonsense and then don't bother engaging with anybody who might want to challenge the one-eyed views espoused.

Hey, what's the problem here?
Someone said these vehicles are going to fund more interesting product from LR. What exactly do you have in mind by "interesting"? So far as I'm concerned an SUV with a big engine and stiff suspension doesn't fit that category. Round my way they're generally found on the school run for wealthy mums. If this view offends the new breed of SUV thought police taking over PH, so be it.

It seems like the correct answer was A) Return and spout low rent Clarskonesque soundbites without actually seeking to engage Someone said these vehicles are going to fund more interesting product from LR. Nope - what that person said was that the Evoque Cab might fund other vehicles that people would like.
Not everybody will share this sentiment but in my view if Evoque cabs and other niche but high profit LR products fund continued development of proper 7 seat Discoveries, FFRRs and a Defender replacement than that's a good thing.
And seriously what the hell does "SUV thought police taking over PH mean" ? That sounds like utter nonsense to me but I'd love you to expand upon it and help lift the veil from my eyes......
And here's a final thought for you each year I do two or three european road trips with a group of mates in what I think you would class as "sport cars". Last time out it involved two 458s, two R8 V10s, two 911 GTS and an Aston V8V, every single one of the owners runs a Land Rover product too. Have they been got at by this mysterious "Thought Police", are they not worthy of the PH community or are they just people who appreciate various types of car and don't suffer the inverse snobbery which blights threads like this ?

Land Rover IS actually looking at building a sports car... there's been talk some time of it.
In any case, whenever I'm sat in one of my SUV's and I'm looking down at the guy in his sports car, low to the ground, scrapes from the poor British roads, all that performance to sit in a jam; I'm not sure it screams 'petrol head' to me. It just says 'daft sod'.
Pistonheads is full of false petrol heads who have a criteria of what makes them a petrol head and then they will stick to those rules. There was a time when automatics were seen as the most 'non' petrol head thing one could have... now, it's accepted that for daily driving in average traffic and jaunts alike, autos are OK. I remember way back, when sat navs were on the list of non petrol head accessories... now these are also accepted. It's so funny seeing how worked up people get.
Will I buy an Evoque convertible? No. Can I see the appeal? Yes. I'm in the French Alps now driving some light trials and I can see how one would fit. Will most of them ever be used for such a scenario? Probably not. Who cares! Land Rover can't make cars quick enough so they're laughing all the way to the bank. The new defender and discovery will retain the original LR DNA I'm sure so rest easy. All Land Rovers are capable off road; all are better than any other soft roader offering. Put up any 4x4 offering from the usual 'soft roader' suspects against any of the new LR's and you'll see the difference.
Track cars are brilliant fun; sports cars are great; I've had a couple; A family member has a DBS... it's great but after 10 minutes sat at roundabouts and in slow moving traffic; I just think; what's the point! Yes, there can be special trips but the day to day makes them the worse kind of cars in my opinion.
My question is, why is a low slung sports car driving through mundane city traffic ok - and an SUV not? If one doesnt make much sense, surely the other makes even less.

Is that shorthand for very popular cars that loads of people want to pay good money for, thus making a healthy profit.
How dare they!
I know it's weird isn't it ? Businesses in desire to make profits despite what people who will never buy their cars say on an internet forum shocker How dare they!
Edited to add that the gucci etc tripe were not my words, I am merely a hamfisted typist and screwed up quoting the author of said !

Don't forget; the very first Land Rover was a convertible...
I saw a white one at CarFest this weekend and it wasn't for me. Especially in 2WD guise.
They don't sell a 2WD version.....I saw a white one at CarFest this weekend and it wasn't for me. Especially in 2WD guise.
And to all the haters, I wouldn't worry about it to much - they are not exactly flying out of the dealerships
I've not seen any public figures?
If you want a car you order and wait for the delivery. As above, we have 3 ordered and due for delivery before end of the year. We don't currently have any orders beyond December. My guess is that if sales do pick up it will be from Feb 17 onwards (in time for the spring)
I saw one a few weeks ago (in the UK) it was raining - of course - so the roof was up. It was orange..the car not the driver. I just thought it an ugly little runt of a thing..again the car, but then I suppose the owner too...
Land Rover have come a long way from farmyard special Defenders, practical utilitarian Discos and semi-luxo Rangies to make this sort of thing.
