1987 Spyder Silverstone. 3SGE Rev3. GSXR throttle bodies.

Interesting, looks like a bit of a weapon! Any idea how much power it's making?

4AGE (1.6l) is probably the sweetest revving Toyota engine.

I have the JDM "blacktop" version in my MR2 - 5 valves/cyl, VVT, quad throttle bodies, 4-2-1 exhaust. Toyota's response to the VTEC Hondas.

It makes peak power at 7,800 rpm, and is still pulling strongly when the fuel cut spoils the party at 8,300.frown

Apparently the bottom end is good for 9,000+ rpm - I'll find out in a year or two.
the 4AGE loves some extra revs! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V0OuFegTbNw

My EP3 Civic Type R was an absolute gem, the swell of power (or the feeling of it, assisted by some clever mapping from Honda) on the VTEC engagement, the incredible induction noise and the best gearbox I've ever felt on a car made it a joy to drive hard. That wonderful powertrain, in a nimble, raw hot hatch for bugger all money, it was a hell of an achievement from Honda and we will never see the like of it again.

The 2.5 Busso V6 in the Alfa 156. Pretty flat under 3k, then just built and built as the revs went on, saving its very best until right at the very top end. The lovely little kick at around 6k was addictive. And the noise.....cloud9

I'd also nominate the 1.7 Ford Puma engine. Only revs to about 6500 but loves being up there and sounds and feels really good when being wrung out.

I find the M44 BMW 4 pot engine revs very well and it also seems bulletproof, it's a lovely little twin cam n/a lump.
I liked it so much that when I bought another car I looked for a car with that engine rather than the car itself.

The only thing is it's now old and was replaced when the E46 came out so I will have to hang on to the two cars I've got with that engine.

Original 895cc Mk 1 VW Polo. It was sloooow but, after the rough old A series in a Mini the sewing machine hum all the way to the 'cruising maximum' of about 85 was a taste of the future.

Another for the M20 BMW six in E21/E30. 325i super refined all the way to the redline. 323i bit more of a ruffian but epic barking exhaust note and would go sideways at 20mph on a damp surface.

I've always wanted a Honda S600. Like the S2000 but older, lighter and more raw. 9K plus. Rather expensive these days though.

I just last night bought a SportKa.

That thing likes to rev. It's also about as loud as a jet engine when it does it.

My old Puma 1.7 was even revvier, mind. I loved that thing.

Focus ST170. It was just getting going when the rev limiter kicked in. Unfortunately it was so long geared that hitting the red line in any gear other than 1st would have you over the speed limit.
I thought this too. If I remember correctly, peak power came at 7200RPM but the rev limiter was 7250! Just why?

Don't even get me started on the gear ratio's. Or the torque limiter in first and 2nd. It meant that you couldn't really use full power, anywhere! A great car, ruined by that box.

Get a 1.0 Hijet to hit 70 mph downhill and then do as I did and lift up the passenger seat / engine cover.

I actually thought I had opened a gateway to hell.

It made a Mazda 787B sound like an electric milk float.

Torque limiter is only in 1st, not sure why it's there as traction in 1st is never an issue and the gearbox is identical to the one in the R53 Mini Cooper S which has a torquier engine. As it is the car only really comes into it's own at 45mph+ where it wakes up in 2nd between 4.5k and 5k. From there the ratios are quite closely stacked but it would really benefit from shorter ratios for 1st/2nd/3rd and getting rid of the torque limiter.

I thought it was pretty well known that the Ka engines were breathless old Anglia derived engines. The Puma doesn't mind being revved but the 1.8 SRI Corsa felt much happier to be revved I thought.

A friend had one of these when we were teenagers. Seem to remember it revving very quickly to nearly 8K. Great little cars.

Import crx del sol b16a 170bhp. Cat removed silencer kept on. 8350 redline.

Insanely fun. No rasp, just bwarp till 5300 and scream all the way up. Apparently sounded like a bike in the distance and could be heard for a good few miles.

Williams Clio and the 1.8 valvers were belters too. Gti 6 also loves it.

I think it helps having some sort of exhaust and induction kit fitted on the quieter standard cars.

Currently driving and s2000 on a standard exhaust. Feels strangled at higher revs to me. Needs more air flow to really let the vtec come to life.

Edit because I left out rotaries. Never tried one but jeebus christ i would love to drive the st out of an FD.
