My passat is complaining about adblue running out. I bought some and put two litres in. It's still complaining about adblue running out. Surely this isn't a dealer job?

On some cars you have to fill it up to the max for it to reset. Don't be so tight, just brim it.

Why would you not just brim it?

Check the handbook but there will be a minimum amount of around 5-10 ltrs you have to put in before it will register.

My car (Audi so will be the same type of engine) needs at least 6 litres to register a refill. You can get 10l from halfords for £20 or try a truck refuelling station where it's cheaper.

In our Tiguan there's a sticker by the filler that says it needs at least 5L (holds 12L) when refilling.

VW has enforced a fixed price of £1.50 per litre (which includes putting it in) on the dealers so it it's not inconvenient to go to a dealer then it's little more expensive than doing it yourself - especially if you're buying it in small bottles.

VW garages have a blanket charge of £1.45 or thereabouts per ltr, my Touareg is a tank under the spare wheel, so a minor faff. Couldnt see the point of buy 20ltrs on line and spilling it in the boot for less than a £10 saving myself.

I've just brimmed mine to see how much it uses, just out of interest, 1.5l per 1000 miles.

I think Audi do something dodgy to extend the range as they claimed it would last between services.

Our Tiguan uses a litre about every 400 miles but other Tiguan owners are reporting greater use than that.

I'm just rubbing my crystal balls and foresee much rust around the Adblue tank in the future

This.

It's a tenner for 10 litres from my local indy parts factors. The Tiguan I'm leasing is 10 months old and I've already filled it 3 times. I figure it's just one of those consumables.

I don't have the manual to hand right now - Mrs T and the kids are visiting the mother-in-law - but I'm pretty sure it says you have to put more than 2 litres in to get the message to disappear.

NB: the message usually still flashes up on the first start-up after the refill. Turn it off and on again and it's fine.

Yeah, I overfilled the other week and ended up with some on my trainers and the drive. I've only got the car for another 14 months but I guess my mistake could be an issue for a future owner?

User error then. Been away for the weekend and got back to put in more... and more... and more... and entirely 10l bottle gone! Maybe the "Min 1, Max 2.5" message meant gallons then! Problem sorted, it reset itself after I filled it right up. For those interested, I've just passed 5,000 miles in it for that refill.

Topped mine up today, it's doing just over 2l per thousand miles so that would be about 40l between services.

It probably is gallons, someone will have thought they were being clever when switching from metric to imperial in the units used on the display, or a lazy programmer has used a quantity without checking whether it changes or not...

My tractor, which I think is Tier 3B uses about 2 percent of it's fuel volume in urea by way of comparison. I think later machines go up to 4% but could be wrong. I don't think it uses any EGR though the later models do.
