I blame being 34y/o and therefore in my late teens in the early 90s. This means that every supercar/ Motorsport book I had was full of this kind of thing during my formative PH years. There was also Gran Turismo on the PS1...
The turbo Jap stuff is what I went on to actually own, but these cars were what dreams are made of. I'd totally daily the F1 as seen in this video with Tiff, and I really do mean daily- commute, Tesco etc;

Mazda 787B. The looks, the sound and the speed. The manual gearbox. The throttle response. The downforce. It's a race car that can deal with normal road surfaces, and has lights and wipers. It also has history and was a winner. And I touched it while the Mazda woman was looking the other way.
Real world:
RWD or AWD
V8; with or without forced induction
Coupe or convertible. If convertible it should have a hard folding roof
Quick off the line and good mid-range punch
300-450bhp
Something that 'blends in' in most situations, but is also a head-turner where appropriate (difficult criteria).
I'm a bean counter, so I dislike spending a lot on cars - budget £30k
Sensible ownership costs.
RWD or AWD

the thought immediately hit me when an early post said "lightweight" and other sporty things, followed by "V12".
2 car garage should be a pure petrol head garage (ie cars to drive, not carry families). Then you'd (*typically*) have people selecting a focussed lightweight and a more GT car. You're idea lightweight wants few cylinders but there is so much joy in bigger engines.

Everytime I look at the RS7, I get to the back end and run away to the RS6, never to return. It saddens me that I love the front end of the RS7 every bit as much as I hate the back end of it, so I'd have to stick to the RS6 that just looks great from every angle (imo.)Or maybe this:-

Not that I can choose between these anyway, I drive a Focus ST. I'm not close to being able to choose between these.
Needs to be quite compact but have decent space, something say Mk2 Golf sized

Ideal car: Audi Allroad C5 2.7T
Odd choice perhaps, but I owned one of these and after it was crashed in to and written off I struggled (and still am) to find a replacement that was so effective as a daily driver.
Why I'd choose this over pretty much all else:
- BiTurbo engine
- Factory air suspension
- Factory wide-arch bodywork
- Huge boot, immense rear legroom and hugely spacious period cabin
- (Relatively) simple electronics and gizmos
- Presence - in my opinion it's so much more desirable looking than contemporary Allroads and other Avants
A few people have mentioned the RS6 which is my dream car (any version) but a C5 Allroad is to my mind just a sublime left-field package with more of a character.
