£25k on a car with the mileage you do. Insanity. Especially as it's 'borrowed' money.

You have £9k. I'm sure an early F10 5-series would be not far from that money these days. Or maybe the outgoing E-class.

I'm a massive F10 fan, so I'd go with that option, but at a lot less than £25k.

Okay, sounds like the boring approach is not really appropriate if you are taking an "only live once" outlook.

Looking at what you require, it does sound like you actually need two cars. The estate (IMHO) will never cover all the bases when it comes to outright fun and enjoyment, even though something like an S, M, or AMG derivative will try it's best, so how about getting the right tool for each of the jobs.

Firstly you need a nice, comfortable Estate to handle family duties and majority of your commute. A DSG/S-Tronic/Equivalent BMW 3 series Estate/A4 Estate/Volvo/Merc C-Class estate with a diesel engine will cover that perfectly. You can get something not too old for around 12-14k.

Secondly, you need something that is all about enjoying driving, when it's either just you or just you and the missus. With a circa £13k budget Id be thinking along the lines of BMW Z4 3.0 or Porsche Boxster, or even an appreciating classic like an S2000.

That way you arent trying to cover all bases with one car, but of course running two cars is more expensive so depends how important outright driving enjoyment is.

I'll be honest I am a careful with money kind of guy. This is partly why I have never got anything nice previously!

Although its a mixed bag of estates on the list they are the ones I like.

Mondeo was on the list as we had fusion in america and liked it - 2.0 turbo petrol would be the one I would get.
DS5 I had a look at last night - seems the same in the back as my astra - so that maybe a no. Test drive hopefully booked for weekend.

I really don't know if I could stomach a amg merc - as much as I love hearing it etc, going to the south of france in one filling up about 3 times will become tiresome. Plus with my 10 miles a day town driving costing me nearly £4 to get to work. That makes me sound like I don't know what I want which is partly true I think.

Have thought about getting the astra fixed - its going to cost about 1500 and keeping that and getting something a bit special.

Part of me feels I have fallen out of love with driving a bit - but I think driving a diesel has partly done this. Test drove a type r (09 plate) and to be honest I felt alive for the first time in ages.

I think in generally I have just got a bit bored - think the v8 itch needs to be scratched - maybe with something like a audi s5 al;though being a coupe could run this next to the astra.

S2000 I am not keen on, same with cars like lotus etc -I will not get to drive them the way they should be driven - I do like a bit of comfort unfortunatly.

I do thank everyone for there response - some decent cars have been put in this thread that I had completely forgotten about!

Need a few days on Autotrader I think!

This could well be the case, but none of the options you've mentioned strike me as being cars that would be likely to rekindle this! All those you've mentioned sound like comfy (but entirely ordinary) daily drivers. Cars that will lose you a ton in depreciation whilst not being much more than simply transport. I know we all have our own preferences on what we want in a car so if that really is what you want then there's nothing wrong with that whatsoever smile

But then you say the type R made you feel alive for the first time in ages so there is clearly some part of you that wants something a bit, exciting? Something that you might want to go out for a drive in just for the sake of driving it? To me even the 09 Type R is nowhere near special enough to be anything other than a fun daily driver (and I am a HUGE Type R fan), so maybe go to some garages and have a look at as much interesting stuff as you can.

Obviously there are hundreds of cars out there that could fit this bill depending on what exactly it is that does it for you- looks/sound/engine type/handling/speed etc, so maybe have a think about what things would have you itching to get up early on a Sunday morning just to go out for a drive? Would a 2.0 Mondeo or a company car spec Audi really do this for you?

Exciting doesn't necessarily have to mean expensive either- for example my cousin has a 1.7 Ford Puma worth £400 which I invariably take out for a drive almost every time I am round his house, simply because it is so much fun to drive!

Keeping the Astra would let you get something special without needing to make any compromises (on practicality / MPG etc), not to mention that by not using the new toy every day it will likely still feel special every time you take it out.

think what I want is something that can be easy to drive, but then also something that could be driven a bit nuts if I wanted to.

I guess something like a M135i - being going to and from work easy to drive, but if I want a bit of fun its not the be all and end all in terms of rawness etc, but will still put a smile on your face.

Living in the south east its hard work driving.

Did test drive a 535i a few months back - the space is fine, its a big car, obviously its not going to be like a lotus due to it being huge, but was a little bit fun.

THink generally newer cars are getting a bit stale or maybe just a bit not exciting.

Or maybe its me not knowing what the hell I want!

You could run a seriously special or desirable car that makes you think "I might have an Astra now, but I have an [insert car] at home!"

E.g

Bentley Continetial GT 6.0 W12
Run it on the weekends!

Jaguar XKR Cabrio

http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2016...

Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution Estate (could be used as a daily)

Take this M3 CS and watch it appreciate
http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2016...

Take this Impreza P1 and watch it appreciate
http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2016...

Take this Impreza Turbo 2000 and bag £20000

In fairness I am very much a fan of older cars when it comes to fun/excitement- I leave the newer stuff for basic transport.

But I think its probably more to do with the types of cars you've driven- there are plenty of newer cars out there that offer a lot of excitement (albeit normally at a price), but you probably won't find too much of it in the bigger saloon/estate cars unless you go to the top (or very near to the top) of the tree- AMG etc.

Plenty of decent hot hatches would fit your bill of being exciting to drive when you want it to be, whilst providing more than comfortable enough daily transport when you are not in the mood? Most would leave you plenty of change from your budget too- even many of the newer ones.

I'm not a fan of hot hatches - well I don't mind them - but I think I am pretty sure I want a estate. If we end up with another kid it would just be easier - a hot hatch would have to have 5 doors, hence why I though the golf r estate, cupra etc.

Missus won't let me have a golf - shes not overly keen on bmw either. But then she did email earlier today telling me to buy a 15k supercharged range rover rolleyes horrible car in my opinion

I wouldn't worry, there doesn't seem much point in making your mind up anyway - it sounds like it's your missus who's calling the shots.

I would reconsider laying out 25k cash if you're thinking like that. The only reason I'd go with 25k borrowed cash on a used car would be to get something special like a used M6, RS6, C63 or 911 turbo. By the sounds of it you could get something that fits perfectly for closer to the 10k mark....

If I was in this situation with interest rates as low as they are now I'd be more inclined to get the wifes' inheritance into property (set aside & ready to clear a chunk of your mortgage etc or even look to use it as a deposit for a foreign holiday home?) and take out a bank loan fixed at 2% to fund the car.... Making a few assumptions here, so if your mortgage is already paid off and you already have a place in the south of france - buy the AMG Merc smile.

£9k will get you an S6 V10 estate. I have one for sale.
There's also a £5k RS6 C5 estate on one of the Audi forums if you want to live a life of skidmarks (both kinds)

i must admit I have thought about the porsche cayman - obviously its not a estate. Maybe that will be worth a look - I do think I want petrol next which in this day and age seems a bit alien!

Wife isn't bothered about vw golf or bmw - as much as I like the golf r - i don't mean this horribly - but I think I would rather a big engined car - soemthing I have never had (largest 2.0 diesel!).

2.0 turbo etc will be around for a long time - a v8 or straight 6 (I guess even v6) won't be.

SUV do not appeal to me at all - not interested in range rovers, porsche cayenne etc - just not my cup of tea.

SHame v60 polester need a bit more to drop before I can afford one - starting to sound like I should maybe leave it a year and just get the astra repaired. Good things come to those who wait as they say!

How about a compromise in the form of an Audi RS3 the engine is special it's an estate they're pretty rare & you can get a low mileage one within your budget.
