For the full 25 this would be my suggestion:

If you're not wanting to go that mad I'd go for:

i must admit I have thought about the porsche cayman - obviously its not a estate. Maybe that will be worth a look - I do think I want petrol next which in this day and age seems a bit alien!

Wife isn't bothered about vw golf or bmw - as much as I like the golf r - i don't mean this horribly - but I think I would rather a big engined car - soemthing I have never had (largest 2.0 diesel!).

2.0 turbo etc will be around for a long time - a v8 or straight 6 (I guess even v6) won't be.

SUV do not appeal to me at all - not interested in range rovers, porsche cayenne etc - just not my cup of tea.

SHame v60 polester need a bit more to drop before I can afford one - starting to sound like I should maybe leave it a year and just get the astra repaired. Good things come to those who wait as they say!
Did you look at the others? It would help if I had an opinion so I can actually help you!!!!

How about a compromise in the form of an Audi RS3 the engine is special it's an estate they're pretty rare & you can get a low mileage one within your budget.

25 grand for a 5 year old hot hatch doesn't strike me as great value?
Their rarity will keep the price strong, you can pay less for one but not one with 25,000 on the clock

Not sure if this is just a dealer chip, or a proper Polestar ( guessing the former)

That's a r design with a polestar upgrade chip. I'd look at a proper V60 polestar. Seeing them around 30k, but aware that people are getting significant discounts on them. If I had 25k spare now I'd be at a dealers talking. Just about all the car I'd ever need I think.

I would go the 2 car route.

Trade in the Astra + money to get this

http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2016...

Then spend £6-7k to buy a weekend car like this

I would also consider 2 cars:

A 997 or a 996 then a cheap TDI runaround with the change. Example:

There seems to be plenty of 997's under £25k

For fun, I'm going in with a couple of unusual choices:

Chrysler 300C Hemi V8 SRT-8

  • Thumping big V8
  • Quick
  • Looks the part
  • Estate
  • Auto
  • Rare as rocking horse st
Vauxhall VXR8

  • Another massive V8
  • Also super quick
  • Not an estae, but a big car
  • Auto
  • Not that common

Other than those two; I think an M3/5 or a RS4/6 is going to be your best bet. They hit your criteria exactly; although a RR Sport or Q7 might also be an option.

If it was me, I'd be getting a cheaper everyday estate and buying a weekend toy for occasional use.

I'd be going:

Trade Astra for this:

Astra Nür - £10000

And then buy this:

Impreza Turbo 2000 - £5000

And then buy this:

Mercedes E55 - £10000

I've had a great idea for a feature...

What collection of cars would you buy with a budget of £25k?

It could be called '£25k Garage'.

It's a thread where you make suggestions so there's no right or wrong answers!

I was suggesting instead of spending the whole £25k on a car which will cost him and arm and leg to run why not get a nice sensible estate (Alfa) which looks great for everyday duties and a nice open top cruiser for the weekends and to commute in when the weathers decent.

Just because you don't agree with my suggestion doesn't make it wrong.

And "home hairdressers mobile unit"? :-)
Could have been worse, I could have suggested an MX5 or Boxster!
