My dad's car history as I was growing up. All estates, all hugely practical and not having had an estate yet myself I can see how useful they are day to day. Hopefully after the S Max we'll down size to a wagon of some description. I like to use the Auto Trader app to see what I might get in a few years with certain parameters in the search. Estate, AWD, minimum 2 litre, etc. Urgh I'm a saddo!
My dads car history was very similar. A couple of 240's, 2 x 940's and then a Focus Estate. Grew up with Estates but not had my own as YET.

To put it into perspective, i've had a saloon for the past 2 years. Not needed it at all. It was simply a lease deal that i jumped on when i was moving into a flat, so needed something cheap. I've had 2 people in the back of it twice and barely used it's full boot space potential. I did recently use it for a big tip run for my dad and that's the best proper use of it it's ever had with me!

However, had i have simply liked big saloons, i would have got it regardless. Many on here will tell you not to get something that you don't need, but everyone's taste in cars is different and doesn't have to be justified by what it's generic purpose is. I like estates, i think they look cool. However, having done what i have, i'll be sticking to hatches/coupes for the foreseeable future.

Appreciate the clarification.

What is every ones experience with this issue - is it significantly different to the saloon versions...?
Based on my experience including golf (hatch) v jetta (saloon) and Skoda superb hatch v estate and 3 series coupe v estate this comment is bang on.

Overall I still prefer estate cars.

In the last 6 years I've bought the following cars

Subaru Legacy Estate
BMW 320D (e91)
Audi A6 Avant (C6-one of my current cars)

I've got a thing for them, for one ,I think all the above look better than the saloon counterparts. You will also have that one trip where you turn to the Mrs and say, "aren't you glad we bought an estate" whilst taking pride in how much you've packed in and your organised loading.

I am the only person I know who prefers estates.

Got an e46 BMW 330i Touring - it's not massive but it is pretty practical. I went through a few big hatches (Saab 900/9000) so the big hole in the back was handy after a BMW E36 convertible as a daily for 3 years. Have to say that it is far and away the best looker in the e46 range imho!

To me the estate is of course a compromise...but it's the best compromise as it's a normal car with a big boot rather than a big wobbly bus of an MPV or SUV.

I may be biased towards the estate of course as I have one of these.

Yep, the OH doesn't get my RS4 at all, and to her it's inferior to our Qashqai in almost every way. Not least due to its inability to get into supermarket carparks!

The fact it can do this with ease, whilst the boot is full of luggage, doesn't seem to factor:

How do you struggle in car parks with what is really a fairly small car these days?

Op. Take your OH to a dealer (any of the big brands) and tell her to put something heavy in the boot of a saloon, then ask her to do the same with the estate version. Then order yourself a damn estate man!

Or just buy an estate regardless, they're much easier to sleep in than saloons if she kicks you out for it... ;-)

Another fact is that is it takes much longer to get the cabin up to temp in cold weather or cool it down in hot weather due to the extra space.

Re the extra noise - if you have the retractable boot cover which covers the boot contents up to top of seat level it reduces noise a touch.
For those who have not experienced the extra noise a way to get similar nois in a hatchback is to get rid of parcel shelf then lay the back seats flat.

Me too! No brainer company choice, especially if it’s a V6 Quattro at this time of the year... love surprising the SUV brigade in the snow.

As you can see, not everyone made it into work yesterday!

I just have a noisy 3yr old in the back too!

That is very true - plus you don’t need to go outside of the car to access he boot in those conditions.

In winter i always leave a cheap decathalon sleeping bag in the car a bag of rugged clothes and snow boots/wellies. Also 20 bars of Yorkie and always plenty of bottled water.
