I did about 1500 miles through France & Belgium last week (in my reasonably priced Dacia estate) and thought, with no accuracy whatsover, that most of the SUV's on the motorways were Brits, while every third French or Belgium reg car seemed to be a black estate, laden with bedding.

A cultural thing, perhaps.

The obsession with SUVs here I think is brought on by the fact our roads are worse than a 3rd world country. My car is being ripped apart by potholes; drop links are a near yearly consumable, the steering rack is taking a battering, multiple cracked springs, broken mounts etc because it's now reached the stage that you can't dodge potholes in Edinburgh, you now just pick which pothole you are going to hit which does the least damage. No wonder people drive SUVs when you get battered about just trying to drive to Tesco here, it's a total joke.
Yep, same here in the South West on town/city roads. But I'm not convinced most of the soft roaders will really be any better anyway.

Big alloys/small tyres, road biased suspension and bigger kerb weight aren't conducive to pot holes either and that's what most road type SUVs have.

I've got a Jeep GC that'll float over potholes all day long but is still hard on suspension just because of the weight of the bloody thing. I wouldn't want to hit a pothole in a Q7 on 20 inch rims.

You should. Estates are cool and this is the reason.

I'd love to have a go in the Team BMR Subaru Levorg, I think it looks incredible!

Two adults and one child? We couldn't do more than an overnight stay in anything other than a estate. You must travel light!

Estates are great, but watch these "lifestyle" type estates with sloping rooflines and intruding wheel arches all taking space.

3 series estate we couldn't cope with us and just one baby. Useless couldn't even fit the pushchair in properly. A mini countryman has the same size but better shaped boot than a 3 series tourer (fact).

Try before you buy. But if you don't really need the space then you can go for style over space.

No, the UK obession with big SUVs is bought on by our status culture whereby folks in SUVs are superior to everyone else because they are also driven by those fine shining examples modern Brits in TOWIE and those lovely WAGs.

SUVs ride like rocks anyway. Hit a pothole in a big SUV and you'll just have a bigger bill for those shiny 21 inchers.

didn't realise that about the 3 series and the countryman, will have a try of a few, again the perk of being a company car is i can test drive 4 cars for a week each. The other bonus being a whole month of no fuel bill as they come fully fueled!

I have two V70 T5's, a V90, and two 850 T5 estates and I don't really need an estate.

They are just handy when you do need them (they are quite fast, too)

Generally the 'smaller' estates will have more 'shaped' boots, my E91 3 Series has a lip at the end of the boot and wheel arches inside, making it an odd shape, the 5 Series has no lip which is much easier to loading, and no wheel arches meaning it's totally square.

Obviously comparing the saloon to the estate this wouldn't make any difference.

I'm 26, and have had this A6 Avant for nearly a year now. I bought it because I think it looks better than the saloon, I had absolutely no reason for the extra space. I went for the 3.0 TDI and its a fantastic car.

I have found a reason now though, I've recently taken up cycling again, and bought a road bike, which fits with room to spare.

So just do it! Find a reason for it afterwards!

Lovely looking car, engine to match, I think I'm just going to do it, car ordering time next week, will update with what I end up with after many boring BIK calculations coupled with exciting visits to car configurator websites

Estate is a statement that your balls work.

Plus some bikes in the centreparcs car park and you know you have arrived in middle class mecca.

Wouldn't have anything else.

That Audi is all very well, but you can buy,
1. A Porsche Boxster/Cayman, AND
2. A brand new Mercedes estate car
for the same money! yikes

The current RS6 is my dream car....

But I can't afford to run one! I've put nearly 20k miles on that in less than a year, so the diesel will do me just fine!

Estate's have their usage for certain 'camping' trips...

How do you find the VW, I got put off a bit by the styling but yours in that spec (r-line?) looks lovely.

The only other thing is the BIK seems very high and thats before the options you have to add to bring it to a c-class spec...
Thanks Swampy. I was very close to taking (another) C Class when I was due to change it, but I actually got invited to the launch of the new Passat at Silverstone last year, and after driving it, totally changed my mind. I've now rolled over 30k in just over a year, and I think I made the right choice. Yes, the BIK was higher, especially as I added the 19" wheels (which do give more road noise than the 18", but I liked the style). The car has been faultless. Enough power (could only stretch to the 190), and the DSG is great. I also think the estate looks better than the saloon, and I've certainly benefited from it's huge boot with countless tip runs, moving house, Christmas tree shopping etc etc!
