I love a good Q-car me, and this is definitely a cracker. Yes the Audi would be a more obvious choice but they are less, well, Q aren't they.
One the rarity front, I regularly see a VWToureg R56 Touareg R50 in the same blue as this Passat over here in Sydney. Nice looking thing.

With a fruitier exhaust they sound absolutely phenomenal.

I've purchased a car from this garage before, and while I had few problems and it was for similar money to the Passat, I'd have reservations about spending big money on some of the higher value stock they have.
The politest way I can put it is I received private sale levels of customer service.

No no no. Just no.
I thought it would be fun to get a Passat 2.8 Synchro estate a few years back. Similar recipe of largish V6, 4WD, plenty of space etc.
Worst car I've ever owned!
Truly tedious to drive. Flat footed, wooden with the rear drive noticeable only under extreme provocation. A truly gutless engine unless spanked hard, and yet fuel economy significantly worse than the BMW 540i I had a the same time which was about 9 times as quick.
I put up with it for a year and chopped it in for a Galaxy TDCi which was a lot of fun to drive down a lane and barely any slower in a straight line unless you were thrashing the Passat to within an inch of its life with a cactus full of nails and razor blades.
Ugh. Passats are not for people who enjoy driving.

I think I'd rather spend my £12K on this:

Its not an estate, but lower miles, is more of a Q-car (S-lines with big wheels look for flash), newer.
Now, if only it was a manual, blue, estate.........

3-4 years ago I rode shotgun in a Passat V6 4motion estate owned by an acquaintance.
It had a supercharger set-up, and appropriately-uprated suspension and brakes. The thing that interested me was that, pace notwithstanding, it didn't understeer but rather seemed to want to wag its tail. Acquaintance turned to me and smiled when I mentioned this and pointed the Haldex controller he had fitted, allowing the torque split to be rear-biased. And more enjoyable.ll

Tbf, I could tell that just by the first photo in the article! The politest way I can put it is I received private sale levels of customer service.
I bought a 3 year old Passat W8 back in 2008 with 142k. Ex-Northern Ireland Traffic Branch car. Holes all over the dash. Front seats worn beyond belief. Rear seats virtually untouched. Paintwork shocking. But it was the cheapest 286bhp i ever bought at £2600. But after a month, i felt it was shockingly boring to drive. No soul in it what so ever!! Though not as bad on fuel as you would think for a 4.0L W8!! So i sold it on for virtually the same cash i give for it, so worked out well in the end

Too heavy to make that power make anything exciting,
The funny thing is, as much as these sorts of articles seem to make us want to believe, if a car wasn't well received by driving critics when new, time is not likely to have changed that.
Yes, a car may depreciate, but a boring steer when new, is only going to be worse when old.
Trying to convince that 2nd hand prices are hiding a hidden gem are just easy journalism. There have been enough reliable, insightful journos driving cars for the last 20 years that ultimately, there is no real reason to expect surprises come years later.
The R36 is not worth more, because, well....they are not worth more.

This is far too obvious and unsubtle with it's big exhausts and shouty R badges on the back.
Should be Passat Estate 2.0TSi in bland silver/grey with an all silver TDI badge on the back. Hybrid turbo and Revo remap, sticky tyres, Eibach springs and Nitrons, harder pads, Motul 600 and Superflex bushes everywhere. Job done for £6k
But I would say that wouldn't I.......

As has already been suggested, there must be an equivalent Audi Estate that provides similar pace, for less. Albeit one with look at me lights and broken indicators.
Although I've not driven one, a W8 would be my preference. But looking at the comments above (how can anyone make a 4.0 W8 boring?!) is the best option to take the engine out of it and bung it in an R32 with a supercharger?
Oi! Blue32....

Now that sounds interesting. Is there a Reader's Car thread anywhere? Should be Passat Estate 2.0TSi in bland silver/grey with an all silver TDI badge on the back. I love seeing cars like that with big mileage on them, it just screams "commitment" to me, could have bought a diesel to slog 20k a year in, but went for a three litre, supercharged V6, love it!http://www.pistonheads.com/classifieds/used-cars/a...

An eight-year-old Passat, with over 80k on the clock, for twelve grand? I think you can do a lot better for the money, maybe a V10 Audi S6 for example.
