Put "Car air conditioning top up" into ebay. There is a kit for about £50 you can do it yourself.
Its made by STP and called Eazy Chill, and is very easy to use.
Ive just recieved it today, and fixed the wifes Subaru. I used it to check and top up my BMW , and check my Audi. Well happy wink
Sod that, air con gas is toxic from memory, why mess around with it to save a few quid???
Or why mess around with it to spend nearly double! (Groupon voucher)

Mercs de-activate the compressor if the system loses gas and I think this is why a re-set is required. So if you try to DIY or some other "cheap fix" I suspect it won't be a fix.

Exactly the reason it's in on Friday, if you google it it seems a reset is also needed, not something you can do yourself without the correct software, lead, knowledge

Which is why if you own a Merc it is worth investing the money in the correct software etc. Possibly about £400 or so but pays for itself many times over.

You go ahead, air con gas is not toxic, inhale at will. However rather than discuss this situation let's resort to an irrelevant personal attack just to keep in line with the prevailing decorum here rolleyes

Mess around?
It took 5 minutes. Much quicker than taking to a garage. Time is money.

Yes sounds like a great idea...

Under pressure, 1,1,1,2-tetrafluoroethane is compressed into a liquid, which upon vaporization absorbs a significant amount of thermal energy. As a result, it will greatly lower the temperature of any object it contacts as it evaporates. This can result in frostbite when it contacts skin, as well as blindness upon eye contact.

Your implying the reason I do it myself is because I cant afford to take it to a garage.
I have friends that own garages and have in the past used thier equipment to vac out/ add oil and add the correct amount of R134a to the car, which of course I cant do with this top up kit.
If you only need to top up, this kit is great. Its simple to use, and it is designed not to leak.
Why are you talking about inhaling it? You have no idea, so why comment.

Its R134a, well done you are learning how the refrigeration cycle works.
The trick is you dont get it on your skin, in fact you dont release it to atmosphere.
Do you work in Health and Safety :-)

Wow, you come across as very aggressive and assumptive. Let me help if I can, the OP wants to check if he has an air con leak...now think about what we have both written in that context.

You come across as plain old stupid and scared of the dark.
The first thing you do is connect a gauge to the system. If its really low there is a leak, so you do not attempt to top it up. That is all the kit is for. Checking and topping up.

Yes of course, you are very much correct in everything you have said both about myself personally and the topic in general. Well done. All the best.

Your right. Not just Mercs, but most cars have a pressure sensor which disable the compressor if gas pressure low.
This kit has a gauge you attach to check first of all. If there is no pressure in the system you have a leak so topping it up wont fix it, but at least you know you have an issue.

Yes I've got maths homework to do, but I'm struggling with one of the maths problem, maybe you can help?

Mr Council Estate has a potential air con leak and kiwk-fit will charge £49 to re-gas...if there is a leak kiwk-fit will waive the charge. However Mr Council Estate has found a potential alternative - the cost virtually the same or perhaps even save £5 (using a cheap Chinese knock off from ebay). How much does Mr Council Estate gain in disability benefits as result of his stupidly leading to blindness?

Depending on the control panel it can be possible to reset from it. I certainly managed it on a W210 with proper climate. Took a little while to find the secret code. Felt a bit guilty as Kwik Fit had not charged as it was not any cooler....

But Mr Council estate has done 3 cars with his cheap Chinese eBay knockoff.
Btw Halfords sell the exact same kit as mine for £80 with a £10 refundable deposit for the bottle.
And more importantly if there is a potential leak they won't charge £49 to fix it at all. If there is a leak the £20 reusable gauge alone could tell you that.
