In bright sunshine, it's hard to tell without being side-by-side with a 'normal' car, but is pretty obvious in overcast and night-time conditions. I cannot forsee it being a problem for cameras to pick up; i'd argue no worse than a film of dirt as you often see on scruffy cars.
Do you think the number plate on the car on the left is as easy to be read by a camera as the other two vehicles?
Not very scientific that, is it? A fish eye lens for starters, and other than seeing the other cars have bright yellow numberplates, i can't actually see what it says on them!

I understand it obscures the plate a bit, but with modern cameras i can't imagine they'd have a problem depicting my numberplate.

The irony in this photo is that the Corsa is in the inside lane. Therefore what is the real problem here? As a result, they're probably not speeding. A problem for ANPR cameras? I think if the driver is looking to evade police, surely he/she would be doing everything to blend into the crowd?

I have been pulled over twice so far by the same officer and they have mentioned average speed cameras and ANPRs. So the inference is that i am likely to be speeding or are intending to take part in criminial activity. Whilst he's at it, perhaps i MIGHT run someone over too?

Or, in the words of my friend who is an officer in the Met, perhaps they just have nothing better to do. The amount of rolling MoT failures, cars with deflated tyres and poor driving i see would suggest there is a targeted focus on ensuring cars can be picked up by cameras rather over dealing with issues that have a more serious consequences.

What about when when one of the tts runs into you and drives off and you (and witnesses) can't read the plate?

It's not all about whether plates can or can't be read by cameras.

Can't say I've seen this. Presume it's an attempt to foil speed and ANPR cameras. Given that there are so few police on the road, it may actually work quite well.

I think that's correct, there was a trend of having these plates that are supposed to be camera-proof. They appeared on one of the Traffic Cops shows quite early on, where they showed that hitting the "inverse colour" button on the digital image makes them as easy to read as a standard plate, as long as anyone is looking at the images from the camera.
We work with one of the main companies that supplies the speed cameras on motorways and other 'safety' cameras.
Those tints etc don't work. They have the technology to read past them, usually involving combining an inverted image. They have a test area on a wall with all sorts of plates and avoidance techniques and the cameras read them all!

Let's be honest, almost all of us will speed every time we drive, and most of us will commit a variety of motoring offences on a daily basis so I'm not about to get all holier than thou about it, but it seems odd that someone would fit or alter a number plate that's so obviously different to 99.9% of other plates on the road you are practically begging to get pulled over. I just couldn't be bothered with the hassle.

I am fairly sure that the number plate specs define the colour and reflectivity of the plates as well as spacing.

Saw one of these a couple of weeks ago on a Scirocco, for some reason they had 2 front plates, one on the bumper (tinted) and another in the windscreen (not tinted). Not sure what the point of that was.

Example:
What's the point in this? Surely this is akin to having a neon sign on the roof saying "I'm a complete knob - pull me over now"

Also, it looks st on a white car. Black car, I can sort of see the visual appeal (though it still makes you a huge throbber).

I'd rather take the occasional speeding fine than be pulled over every single time I go out for a drive!

Also - they look st. Like every fad.

Agreed. It looks utter w@nk and an utterly pointless thing to do. Number plates are a legal requirement. They are not a random part of the car for people to mess with as they please. Tinting them and illegally spacing the letters is just gash, but people will always do it because they think they're above the law and oh so original and cool. What evs. Leave the plates be!!

Here is an example on a black car. I guess they wanted to make their headlights less efficient in the dark at the same time as they were showing the law who has the bigger dick. I agree, you might as well have a big sign on the top saying 'pull me over'.

No doubt these same geniuses complain about the Police 'bothering' them all the time as well.

This is more representative and a similar level of tint to what i have. I really struggle to see people's issue.

Erm, its illegal... no debate possible, your plate must be as supplied, you are not allowed to modify and obscure it in any way.

Clearly its done for 2 reaons- Vanity and to dodge Cameras, the first tells us the owner is a Moron, the second tells us they want to break the law and get away with it, so they broke another law to try and break a second one... marks are out for Police as driven by Massive cock-womble of a Moron!

Why make your car obviously illegal, it defys all logic?
