Dark numberplates - New ****wittery or something else?
Discussion
I believe it's pure cosmetic mode
, if you're wanting to cheat the cameras all you need is spray a thin layer of transparent reflection pain to overexposed infra red and flash speed cameras.
or get these little bad boys printed out

Numberplate fkwittery of every variant you can possibly think of and probably many more you can't even imagine is a lasting and popular trend among Essex's Royalty and Cockney Waaankah vulgarians.
Only two possible reasons for this. Either you're a narcissistic egotistical Cockwhisk desperately seeking to attract attention to yourself or you're at the opposite end of the spectrum and very keen indeed not to be identified at all.

They aren't as easily readable to the public so should be illegal.
I think it's this simple.Maybe they could be given a legal definition- just like windows, tints on plates are ok down to a particular level of opacity- after which, they're illegal.
I don't like the idea that there are plates around that you can't read with the naked eye when you most need to.

How about just no tint?Maybe they could be given a legal definition- just like windows, tints on plates are ok down to a particular level of opacity- after which, they're illegal.

There's no good reason to tint your plate and any tint is going to reduce the contrast and in turn reduce the ability for someone to read the plate in some conditions.

I'd tend to be in agreement with you- it's vanity over practicality, and I'd rather they didn't exist. There's no good reason to tint your plate and any tint is going to reduce the contrast and in turn reduce the ability for someone to read the plate in some conditions.
I was just thinking out loud with the tint regulation idea.
Isn't one thread full of wonderfully interesting personalities doing a public service of photographically documenting every plate they see with a slightly outside of the norm characteristic and helpfully allocating the drivers of said vehicles to one of a number of categories including chav, drug dealer, yoof, wker etc. enough?

Number plates already have this it's called BS AU 145d which statesMaybe they could be given a legal definition
"(2) A registration plate must not be treated in any other way which renders the characters
of the registration mark less easily distinguishable to the eye or which would prevent or impair
the making of a true photographic image of the plate through the medium of camera and film
or any other device."

But then, what on earth would you do with nothing to complain about and nobody to shout at?
You could always take up cycling I suppose. Its much the same sort of thing.

To qualify for the right to use a heavily smoked / tinted number plate you must first fulfil the following criteria.
Beard. You must have a lovely beard.
Backwards Baseball cap with the hood on your hoodie loosely pulled up over it.
Gym. You must visit the gym and have `goals'
BAE. You need a BAE.
`Rare' wheels and ultra lows with wheels that are `Fitted'
Other friends who conform to the above and have similar number plates so you can park next to each other and take photos of both cars together.
An instagram account is imperative in order to share all of your photos depicting all points highlighted above.
Hahahahah this is staggeringly accurate!! Beard. You must have a lovely beard.

The only two people I know who would love tinted plates conform to pretty much this entire list.

I have slightly tinted plates on my New Beetle, but that is a sunny day / show car. I have no beard, cap only for practical purposes (I have a hair deficit), gym , BAE ? (something to do with British Aerospace ?), wheels are RS4 rep`s and only lowered 50mm, my friends are more sensible than me, no Instagram or Facebook for me

Would the tint stay on when the car goes for an MOT?
Makes a change from the ‘number plate on the dashboard’ fad I suppose.
Mine were made with tinted Perspex so I swap them for proper ones at MoT time. Yes, I know, I'm a criminal ...Makes a change from the ‘number plate on the dashboard’ fad I suppose.
In my defence, it is on a car that did 75 miles between MoT`s last year.
Numberplates on the dash annoy me. Makes the car look unfinished.
