Yeah, you're right of course, but such a shame.

I disagree, the word J*p is akin to the word P*ki.

I've never thought of Jap as a derogatory term, more like using the word Scot/Scotch or Brit. Maybe it's a regional thing, or the difference in talking about people or their produce.

Regarding their blandness, I think that's an old stereotype from the 90's that's just lasted. A lot of their "appliance" cars were often sold to the American market too following their styling cues, and there are some godawful dull lookng barges over there so it might be a globally inoffensive strategy.

From the past fifteen years, I don't think any of the Prius/Civic/AccordAurus look particularly more bland than Euro stuff:

Not so much. Maybe you should have a word with the organisers of Japfest if you feel so strongly.

Isn't it just short for 'Japanese', like 'Brit' is short for 'Briton' or "British"? How can a concatenation of an official term be offensive? If someone says "Brit car" and "British car" to me I interpret both to be identical phrases.

I don't disagree that it may be offensive to some people. Although I wouldn't stretch so far as to say it's as offensive as the term P*ki to the majority of the Pistonheads user base.

My point however is that no words should be censored on a forum where most of the user base is 18+ and that if someone is so offended by a word that they choose to not use the service then so be it.

That being said, Pistonheads are a private company and obviously should be allowed to censor as they see fit, it's their property. My personal opinion is that banning users who abuse the platform rather than censoring individual words would be a better solution.

Irony: We've derailed a thread and would possibly be up for a warning under "my" rules. haha.

Surelly jap cars are anything but bland ?
thats how i see it too, the audi range is what i call bland. they all look the same just in different scales
Too right, they may have their faults in styling but the Japanese do put practicality first, certainly my FiL's Honda Jazz was marvellous at swallowing up all sorts of large stuff in the back, but you wouldn't think it. My old Subaru Legacy Estate was fantastic, great driving position , swallowed up fridges and sofa's in the back, a great motorway cruiser and a great 4wd system. That would tick the box for a lot of people, but they like slopey rooflines, cramped rears, a desirable badge, and less space in the name of style. I thought my Legacy looked great anyway.

so just got rd of a RX-8 a great looking car, for a CX-3, style wise ,the CX-3 pisses all over Q3/X1/Merc with for a car based on a Mazda 2 a lot of space inside. Style without purpose is a lot of car design nowadays, I'm glad for the Japanese they have all sorts of ideas from engines t(Hybrids, Hydrogen, VTEC, Rotary) to style, including the worst and the best.

The problem with Japanese cars I find is the interior, even the top of the range Lexus' just look a bit "meh":-

My issue with jap cars, 90s cars in particular, has always been the interiors

Take the Skyline for example, an extremely striking looking thing, but you look inside and it's got an interior that looks like it came from a Micra

And Pak* is just short for Pakistani....

From the link you quoted:

Most Japanese people find the word Jap offensive, irrespective of the circumstances in which it is used.

We have several Japanese car shows a year in the UK that use 'Jap' in the name, some have been going for years - Japfest (3 shows a year), Japshow (3 shows a year), Japday (new this year) - I find it hard to believe that these shows would have been able to operate under that name for so long if it is considered so offensive.

German cars are bland. It's what the customer seems to want. I imagine the majority of Japanese car buyers feel the same about the cars their countrymen build. Also how many times have you seen some utterly bland car in US TV series that is clearly local produce?

So you pick a car that began production in 1999, and one that ceased production in 1999

But for what it's worth, other than the fat steering wheel, I still prefer that e36 interior

TBF that's right at the end of the E36 lifespan, the next model was launched around then.

Perhaps the skyline wasn't the best example

This Stagea is a better example of the mental exterior, bland interior trait of Japanese cars

Still some interesting cars being released in Japan but unfortunately they are not available over here.

If you go to the Japanese website for the manufactures you will get a surprise at some of the cool models.

Knowing Japanese does help.

BTW the Ignis pictured in the above site is coming to the UK in 2017.
