I am looking for a bit of feedback on the OEM HUD which is available for the Mini Countryman.

After a week of rolling about in my car using the projector HUD my other half has decided that she needs something similar for her Countryman. I see Mini do supply an official aftermarket HUD which to me looks a bit clumsy once perched behind the steering wheel. Has anyone had one fitted?

My local Mini dealer in Abu Dhabi has just quoted me double the price of the part fitted than what it appears to cost in the UK which is pretty typical out here. Aside from that he informs me that the HUD only operates through the data of the mobile phone it is paired to. This means additional data costs just to run the HUD plus price of the part and fitting!

I read that you have to use a Garmin smartphone navigation app with it, even if your car has nav. There's a video on the MINI site somewhere which shows the aftermarket HUD in action. I've got to be honest, I thought it looked like an awful thing, and I'm surprised that MINI would even promote it because it looks cheap, badly fitting and generally out of place. I've had a proper projector HUD before (in a 5 series) and it was great, but I wouldn't touch the tacky dealer fit accessory with a barge pole.

I had one of these in my last demo ( I work for MINI) and quite liked it.
Sure, it doesn't have the finesse of the factory fit one but it actually had more features than the real thing, assuming you didn't have the full media pack.
The data thing isn't true to the best of my knowledge. The device emits a WLAN signal (like a mini wi-Fi) that runs the Garmin app on your phone, so the only 'data' you'll be using is the phones storage.
You can also use the Garmin app remotely from the car if you're walking somewhere etc so this will use your data.

One more thing; this but of kit was launched for the F55/56/57 models. I'm not sure if it's compatible with the countryman.
Obviously worth checking this before you buy

Resurrecting an old thread, but the new 2017 Mini Countryman (as announced this week) has the option of a factory installed HUD which works very well indeed.

Thanks for all of the advice. Didn't go for the 'bolt on' in the end. Agree that the new Countryman HUD looks a lot better and at least it is built in.
