Glad someone else agrees! The A4 i have now is no better than my previous Scirocco quality and finish wise. People make a big deal out of it and claim they're worlds apart but it's absolute nonsense IMO.
I've never owned either but having been a passenger in the last three generation of A3's I think they peaked with the 8P. The golfs on the other hand have got better year on year so I'd have to agree with you.

Is a VAG product compulsory?

Just asking because I had a BMW 123d for over 6 years and loved it - 201bhp and RWD what else could you want?

Well as I found out 2 years ago you might want a straight 6 petrol engine, so I bought one of those! And I liked it so much I bought another!

VAG products don't seem much removed from Toyotas - white goods!

So you would say it was more fun to drive.
Having driven a GTD DSG, I would rate it as slightly more fun than visiting the dentist, but nowhere near as much fun as going for a walk.

If you want either of these cars 'fun to drive' isn't really one of your criteria.

You're doing it wrong then my friend. The GTD is great fun if you grab it by the scruff of the neck.

Maybe it's down to what you call fun.
A GTD, however badly driven ;-), remains a nose heavy, desperately short rev range, awful power delivery, horrible sounding hatch, in relation to even a turbo 4.

A fine commuting tool though, no question.

The 1.4 petrol engines in the Golf are much more refined, still pretty powerful and a fair bit cheaper.

Absolutely, the one we had handled remarkably well and was great fun to hustle down a twisty A/B road. Sure a Diesel engine is never going to be a petrol engine but it's a good compromise if you want economy with some decent handling.

It's also 100kg lighter, all at the front presumably. Seems far less compromised then the GTD for handling. Lower price should mean lower cost too (the mpg economy delta being inherently a small part of which, and might even be negligible in absolute terms in this instance).

I drove a 1.4 A3 and 2.0D Golf back to back and the Audi certainly felt more balanced and better over rough roads even though it has larger wheels.

However these cars aren't really concerned with handling finesse so that's probably of little importance to most drivers.

Absolutely, they're not fun, irrespective of engine.

I'm happy to differ in opinions, but yours is also just that, an opinion. My opinion is that a GTD is or can be a fun car to drive if driven the right way. It'll never be as fun as my MX5 or 350Z was/is. But the chassis felt good, it had lots of grip, a reasonable amount of grunt, and despite your complaints about it being nose heavy it turned in and felt pretty good under braking. A GTI it isn't, but it's not far away.

The basis for my opinion is that we had it for a year as the wife's company car.

Fair enough and I guess it's about perspective. I'd be curious to know in which way you can drive it and have fun ? Trail braking ?

Neither of these cars are any sort of fun. Economical and competent but not fun.

Hi guys how's it going?

As the title suggest I'm looking at these two cars.

The power doesn't bother me i.e 184ps (golf) vs 150ps(audi) as I'm coming from a vw polo 74ps 1.0 this is all about what use would prefer

With adding keyless entry, folding mirrors and other standard equipment that's on the gtd, the price is about 1k more expensive for the audi, after I BFG it and the tax is taken away smilesmilesmile

So personal preference really,

Thanks in advance you wonderful bunch
Hi, ive got to honestly say im selling both cars including 14 plate GTD with only 16,000 miles for £17499 and im getting way more calls for the GTD than the A3 S-Line so based on that id say the Golf was in more demand probably due to running costs being so low. £20 road tax for full year??? awesome or what.

Here's a stupid opinion that I'll share anyway: I would pick the Golf GTD, cause it's the one made with performance in mind (even if they've completely missed the mark as some have suggested, I've never driven one so I can't comment,) and it's the "Top of the Range" in the Diesel Golf Range.

The Audi however, still has an "A" in front of the 3 and "S-Line" is as exciting as "M-Sport" trim, so feels a bit more like a mid-ranger to me.

Why do I feel this way? I don't know, but I'd probably have the Golf.

The Golf GTI w/Performance Pack, that is :P

Stuck in a similar situation...

I've had 2xS3s and 5-6 Golf GTI's mk6 dsg being the last. I now have a van for my work so no posh cars for me, grrr.

The wife does a 2 hour round trip each day and currently has a mk6 GT tdi 140 but now it's time for a change,

First I was looking at A4 avant black editions but the still only offer a cvt gearbox, even on a 2014 car,
I was thinking its a fairly big car to travel day to day in manual (we are getting old with a little one)

I think I've decided if we wanted to go away camping etc the transporter will be used, a bit gypsy style with
2 adults and a baby up front but everything can get chucked in with no worries of space.

Soo... A3 sline 150 or Gtd..

I like the look of both but as people have said the a3 looks very open and maybe basic inside compared, I've sat in a few Gtd's and they seemed like a nice place to be, good spec standard and the extra bhp is a bonus (hopefully I feel I can have a little bit of fun if needed)

We've decided gtd dsg with a few goodies should fit the bill.

I can't exactly pinpoint why, but this thread is depressing me.

I have to ask though... are you going to add the keyless entry or not?

The quattro variants have a S-Tronic (DSG) box...
