Here's a stupid opinion that I'll share anyway: I would pick the Golf GTD, cause it's the one made with performance in mind (even if they've completely missed the mark as some have suggested, I've never driven one so I can't comment,) and it's the "Top of the Range" in the Diesel Golf Range.

The Audi however, still has an "A" in front of the 3 and "S-Line" is as exciting as "M-Sport" trim, so feels a bit more like a mid-ranger to me.
GTD is the same thing as S-Line or M Sport. It's all trim level stuff. There is nothing 'special' about a GTD over an S-Line Audi or an M Sport. It's hardly a diesel Golf R.

I can't exactly pinpoint why, but this thread is depressing me.

I have to ask though... are you going to add the keyless entry or not?
It's now standard on a GTD so no need to add it

I had a GTD - when I drove it over the Brecon Beacons I realised it was reasonably fast, but not fun.

That said it was well spencer and a nice daily if you do big miles.

Berty, have you ever considered a car other than a VAG?
I looked at the f31 3 series touring 320d or 330d, probably a bit out of the price range on the spec I would want,
Open to suggestions if you can think of anything.

The 3.0tdi stronic seem to be a hard find... would like one, but looking at bca etc not many around.

I have a specced up GTI PP and like it a lot. Can highly recommend if you're in any doubt.

I think it's the only Mk7 diesel Golf (other than the Alltrack) where you can get the 2.0 TDi engine in 184PS tune. The others all max out with a 150PS 2.0TDi. So it's definitely the 'sporty' diesel variant and so I would expect it to stack up pretty well compared to a regular TDi or Audi A3.

(Not sure what output level the A3 TDis are available up to, probably 150PS. Maybe higher for the Quattro model?)

No it isn't, it's listed seperately from the rest of the Golf lineup and specifically in "Performance Golfs".

Also, VW have R-Line as their S-Line and M Sport equivalents. The GTD is listed alongside the GTI as a variant of Performance Golf.

Just for a reference point, at what mileage in the UK would you pick a diesel over a petrol, economically?

In Belgium it's very low, at say 12k miles. In the Netherlands, the rule of thumb is about 20k miles...

I read yesterday on another site that break-even is now typically north of 15,000 miles in the UK.

Oh well there we go then, its listed differently on the website, it must be really special in ways a humdrum 340i M Sport just isn't.

All hail the 180bhp Golf diesel hehe

What are the differences between this and the R then, bar the powertrain?

It actually has more power under the hood than other models, not just a trim level as you seemed to believe.

No it doesn't - the same engine in the same state of tune is available in other Golfs - ie the Golf Alltrack.

There is no real difference between the concept behind 'GTD' or 'S-Line' or 'M Sport' or 'AMG Line' or whatever. It's a diesel Golf with sports suspension, better seats, bodykit, etc etc. Just like an S-Line Audi or what have you.

I'm not saying its bad, far from it - it's a great car! It's just no different to the likes of the 120d M Sport.

The Alltrack is the only other golf that has the TDI unit with the same power output and it's a soft-roader - set up totally differently and only available as an estate.

The GTD is the only hatch with the 184PS engine. It has a uprated brakes, the XDS+ traction control of the GTi/R, the variable steering rack of the GTi/R, a stiffer suspension and lower ride height than the 'non sporty' Golf models - and as a result of all the changes it's marketed along with the GTi and R by VW.

It's NOT just a trim level as you try to keep insisting on because you're too thick headed to admit you didn't know what you were talking about (that's what the R-Line is for, the direct equivalent of the likes of Audi S-Line) - You might as well insist that the Golf GTi is just a trim level.

Well managed to find a GTD for the wife at the weekend and we love it.

DSG
Flat Black (like a mirror when polish which i quite enjoy)
Winterpack - Heated Seats, washers etc.
Dynaudio - Came as a bonus and love it, finding it better than Bose.

The standard spec is perfect - active cruise, front and rear pdc, bluetooth, xenons, autofold mirrors, satnav, bluetooth streaming etc.
Theres plenty of nice touches on the interior at nightime, led strips etc.
DSG box as good as i rememeber.

Driving wise its nice and relaxing but there is enough power midrange to have some fun if needed.

Happy we went with the Golf, an A3 sline in a similar spec would have been a difficult find, some dont even have rear parking sensors.

A great allrounder, go for it OP.

Few pictures, the dirty mk6 needs a clean and selling...

I didn't think VW did a flat black, all black 'performance' Golfs are Deep Black Pearl only?!?

I thought the same, flat black is not showing on the vw config now so must have been available for a year or so.

Love it or hate it, shows every mark but when polished it looks a real glossy darker colour than metallic.

On launch flat red and flat black were the only free colours, but too many people took red as it looks so good. So they made red a special colour (like white) and charged for it, so flat black was the only free colour. Looks like now they have discontinued flat black and made white the free colour
