I'd like to go watch NASCAR some time. Just to...see if I get it. I'm still a bit unconvinced, think I need to go see it live and see if that changes anything.
You absolutely need to see it live to appreciate it.

40 or so cars going past you in a pack at around 200mph certainly livens things up.

^ this - I've watched F1 in the past but spent the last 15 years watching NASCAR and it's in a different league as far as racing and a spectacle goes

I have to agree I've seen both live & Nascar is a better spectacle especially when a car can go a lap down & through strategy & fine tuning the car they can win.

On top of the that the wind blast as 40 cars blow past at 200mph is something I'll always remember & the noise.

I was at Homestead in 2011 when Tony Stewart went from the back to the front of the race twice passing 118 cars in the course of the race it was incredible to watch from the grandstand especially when I'm not a Stewart fan (Jeff Gordon fan) it was NASCAR at it's best

Me and 4 mates were at the Daytona 500 in 1999. And the then Busch series NAPA 300 race the day before.

Jeff Gordon winning the 500 closely followed by #3 Earnhardt Senior. Rusty Wallace leading more than half the race. The sound of 42 900hp beasts coming round turn 3 onto the back stretch the first few laps tightly packed was just awesome, sending massive vibrations thru the stands biggrin .

Had a flyover that day of 5 F18's aswell biggrin

This thread is a few years old now but the basics are still true, so worth a read: http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a...

As far as the racing goes there are plenty of boring bits/races but when it gets going it gets crazy. Lots of characters in the sport too.

Dale Earnhardt at Talladega in 2000, 18th place to first in five or so laps and took the win. I was never really a fan of his but that was amazing,as good a drive as I've seen in any form of motor sport.

Never thought NASCAR was something I'd actually like but those cars packed together screaming round the track at 200ish mph really is quite something!

Compare today's F1 GP qualifying,

  • Empty grandstands
  • Completely predictable outcome

Anyone else think this reads like a Facebook clickbait article with a similar level of content?

Did you see the massive crowd at indy the other week? No, neither did I.

NASCAR has been suffering falling numbers for a few years, the fact that they don't release attendance figures any more speaks volumes.

Ticket prices for major motorsport events today, Sunday 31 July 2016,

F1 Hockenheim - €350

NASCAR Pocono - $85

The F1 grid for today is in its most dreary "Noah's Ark" format, with the top ten places occupied by five times arranged side-by-side. $350 to see the race? Sebastien Vettel is right when he says the seats are grossly over-priced.

NASCAR is an amazing spectacle. Some of the best motorsport I've watched.

I defy anyone not to come away from a big race with the urge to fk their sister and drink piss-water beer biggrin

Last time I did Homestead (2014) $250 got me 3 days of racing - all the practice and qualifying sessions and a seat in row 14 in the grandstand right on the start line opposite the pits and preferential parking. We stayed in a hotel north side of Miami and only on race day was the traffic a little heavy and it took just over an hour and a half to get back to the hotel as opposed to just an hour.

I compare that day to the last time I went to Silverstone for the British GP and I know exactly why I will never do that again.

Weekend at the British gp have 3 days of racing for £125 so actually a bit cheaper than the above.
