What do you want them to build?

I like the idea of the Rocket but the price looks daft compared to other lightweight bike-engined cars.
Mind you, getting a four-wheeler under 400kg is mighty impressive.

and a certain GM to the pedigree.
on the one hand the market doesn't want proper drivers' cars, but then did it ever?
you need to pay more, but even then the quality now is better than ever.
Elise and MX5s are the exception that go under the radar as girly/toy cars. Even a 50k Elise is good value imo. not many agree tho.
Yeah that. Plus the level of bespoke componentry, all designed by a stunning team. Also one of the first road legal bike engined cars.
Lose things like the transaxle and they would have been quite a bit cheaper. Uprights, hubs, etc. too.
Can't help but think that a modern composite tub with moulded in cockpit, firewall mounted engine cradle so nvh is reduced a tad, and greater use of off the shelf components could give a cheaper, safer and not much heavier car for similar dosh to it's original asking price. That'd be worth it over most of the alternatives.

A bit over budget, but other than that I would have thought a GT86 is pretty close to what the OP is looking for!
I test drove one in 2014 as a birthday present to myself! It drove really well (when I finally got to drive it) but I spent longer talking about P/Ex values, options and finance than driving.
6 weeks later I went to look at a Z4 Coupe advertised privately for about one third of the money - put a deposit on it straight away!
OK so a Z4C may have a stereo and climate control and weigh rather more than 1,100kg, but sitting just in front of the rear wheels with a 3 litre straight 6 mounted more behind the front axle line than above it does provide plenty of entertainment! More than the GT86 for me.

Is there a car configuration you wish manufacturers would make. Below is mine and as far as I know there isn't anyone building it?
Small 2 seat coupe with front-mid engine and rear wheel drive weighing around 950kg.
Around 130bhp 1.6 16v twin cam high reving engine.
6 speed manual gearbox with LSD.
Double wishbone suspension front and rear.
16" alloy wheels.
No aircon or radio.
Electric windows and remote locking, nothing else.
Under £20k
Pretty much spot on what I want apart from I'd rather have a radio over central locking and electric windows. I can get over winding down a window occasionally as well as using a key but regardless of how you use the car, there will always be motorway miles and times sat in traffic when a bit of music helps!Small 2 seat coupe with front-mid engine and rear wheel drive weighing around 950kg.

I would add a rear windscreen wiper - it amazes me people consider a car with out one, and a boot large enough for at least a holdall.
Most of all daily driver reliability...
Since this is all hypothetical, and I expect a car like this is too niche for production. I would like a cam-chain, pre-cat engine just to keep things nice and simple and get that straight through exhaust sound.
Have a diesel Octavia VRS as a daily at the mo, happy with it but want to go back to petrol next.
Skoda do a perky petrol VRS but only in fwd with 230bhp.
They do the diesel in awd
What I want is the petrol 230bhp spec (or preferably 280/300 from the Leon or Golf) with the awd and a manual box.
All the components are there I just can't order them in the one car!
Would also be happy to see a yeti VRS of any sort but preferably the awd 280/300 combo above as then it would be like a modern Forester STI
Seen there is a guy who put the Audi TTRS running gear in one which is ace.

Ignoring the budget (which frankly isn't realistic for something that specialist), this fits the OP's description reasonably well:

For me, I can't realistically see anything bettering my Elise without being an order of magnitude more expensive, which is why I've had it for nine years now and have no intention of replacing it.
I don't think the budget is unrealistic, Mazda almost makes that car. If they could build a proper fixed coupe version of the current MX5 that would be perfect. They even did a few for the mk1 and mk2 but in very limited number and only for Japan. http://www.pistonheads.com/road-tests/road-tests/d...

They could offer 2 different trim levels, one stripped out and back to basics for enthusiasts (a bit like the Ginetta G40R) and another more luxurious spec with all the toys and creature comforts. I really think it would sell and it would be much more practical than the soft top version because it could have a bigger boot. Toyota ALMOST got it right with the GT86, I just hope they build the SFR.
