Looking for an estate between £3000 and £4500 which is stylish and reliable.

As mileage under 6k a year not too worried about MPG but needs to be an automatic and not too slow. Not bothered about petrol or diesel

I would consider a hatchback if not was possible to get a BIG dog in easily..!

Shortlist so far is VW Passat, A4 Avant, Subaru Outback 2.5..Maybe Golf or focus

Any views/comments

Thanks

My suggestion would be a mazda 6 hatchback. The boot is massive!

Edited to add our English pointer cross used to look lost in there. The boot was actually bigger/more practical than my XF sportbrake

Any age requirements? If not then my slightly biased leftfield choice is the Legnum VR4

Thanks for those so far

Mazda 6 nice but my dog wouldnt fit in a sloping hatchback like that(hes 6ft when he stands up)

Bmw - nice cars but from what i understand terrible in the winter

Merc - think i would get a rust bucket at this price

Octavia - possible as the rs is the best one maybe thrashed

Only my initial opinions...not necessarily correct

You live in Cheshire, the winter won't be an issue.

Sorry for not mentioning this but it will be my wife's main car and she does not like BIG estates ie Volvo, legnum...if it was an estate we would be looking at a stylish small to medium estate

Sorry about that

There's nothing inherently bad about a BEN that can't be fixed witha set of winter tyres.

If the weather is so bad that a BMW is struggling to accelerate, then it's highly likely that it's also going to be difficult to stop, and stopping will effect all cars not just rear wheel drive cars.

After going from a 1999 W202 C class estate (which had a good sized boot) to a 2004 B6 A4 avant I would suggest to avoid the latter. Very small boot for an estate Was very impressed by the boot in the last model Mondeo though. Even in hatch form the boot is massive. Estates I would guess would be huger again. £4.5k would probably see you into a post '05 E Class which would avoid the chronically rusty period of three pointed stars.
