The XK is not really quiet and refined in the way that a CL is
Very true, but it is sexy in the way that a CL is not.
OP said:
The main priority (as per previous thread) is refinement, so comfy seats, low cabin noise and excellent ride quality, oh and reasonable luggage space for trips.
I don't see that in the original criteria
It is implicit in the requirement for a GT or coupe. Otherwise you would not tolerate the compromises and just get a saloon or estate.

both great cars though.

Is that utterly gopping cupholder thing removable? Other than when your passenger inevitably wallops it with their leg or handbag and bends/snaps it?

I'm guessing you can unbolt it but yes that's how they come.

I had thought about an XKR, but thought the newer XK would be a better bet, what would you think?

Better bet in what way?

I think the XKR looks better than the XK. Less depreciation too...

Have a look here: Top Gear Tiff Needell with the Jaguar XKR

Newer is not necessarily better. It all depends on what you want.

For instance newer cars have more electronics and that can be a blessing or a curse depending on your preference (and on the car).

If you can find one near you, why not test drive a XKR and see how you like it?

An XKR does not have low cabin noise or excellent ride quality unless you are comparing it to a Caterham

I don't mean to be rude but have you actually driven one? Unless a XKR is very different from a XK8 I can't agree.

I recently did a 2500 km trip in a XK8 with both motorway (including autobahn) and town driving and I was very comfortable.

S5 is definitely worth a look, the V8 is super smooth and it cruises completely effortlessly. Feels like a proper GT car on long journeys and has tons of performance in reserve. Just a shame about the low MPG!

It's push fit so can easily be removed and stored in the center console.

I have had a XKR and can pretty much agree with Craig, it's a great car, just not low on noise or high on comfort.

If your main criteria is comfort, low cabin noise and excellent ride quality then NOTHING from Jaguars R range, BMW's M, Audi's S, AMG etc etc is going to cut it.

Refinement is all relative of course but you simply can't compare the serenity of something like a CL to an XKR!

Online wise there's the Jaguars Owners Club or Jaguar Forums (and here of course) and, at least in the real world, there's a local Jaguar owners club to me (which did a small display at Teeside Airshow this year and had some nice cars on show).

They have only ever built three in RHD. One in the old model and two in the current model

I think most of the suggestions above are worth an audition...XK, S5, 6 series, CL500 and maybe an older (xk100) xkr.

Having said that though, we're still trying to work out which is the better 'car plan' for us!...

either this route - wife keeps Golf, I keep Pajero and we get the comfy/refined 'GT' instead of my Alpina.

OR, as per my previous thread; we sell the Golf and Alpina to get a one car does both jobs (wife use and comfy for long journeys) and I keep the Pajero as my run-about!

As ever, confusion reigns!

Cheers

Thanks smile

I must admit, it is an awesome car!

B6 nice, but even rarer than mine I would think?
