wouldnt it be a pissabout getting a 1,1 re registered as a gti though?

i dont mind spending thousands if itll last another 15 years, i really dont want to buy someone elses problems that they have bodged to get through an mot, buy cheap buy twice is something i live my life by based on experiences
Yes it will, don't go there. It will always be a 1.1 fitted with GTi bits. It's just an exaple of what you can do, it's always better buy buy what you want han build it.

Let's not jump the gun here. We don't yet know what it needs. Nor do we know how long you plan to keep it. There is no point in taking a £1500 car and investing £2k only to sell it a year later, because you'll never see the money back. Just do what's necessary for safety and appearance reasons and when you need to get rid, get rid. It's still worth what it's worth, regardless of "but I've just done £2000 of work!".

One thing i will say, is that what you see is literally just the surface. There will be far more needing cut out and replaced than what you think.

As people have said already, the only way to do it properly in order to make it factory fresh is to acid dip it, then get the bad bits cut out and replaced, using OEM panels where possible.

Its a standard routine for mini owners than have the cash. You are talking thousands.
There's really no need to acid dip a 106 shell that's gone a bit manky in a few spots, total overkill.

Absolutely. We're not talking about a Bugatti Royale found in a lake or one of the prototype 2CVs that were hidden away in barns in western France prior to the German invasion.

I had some massive holes underneath my Impreza Wagon that failed MOT (rust near suspension components,) got rust welded over and underseal applied for £220.

Well if you don't mind spending thousands... sell what you have and buy one that is clean, because you will still end up with a far better car that way.

Trust me, properly repairing rust, is difficult, and expensive, if the problem is widespread. It's all well and good to patch over gaping holes, underseal, and get through an MOT then flog, but if that's not what you want then you won't be spending in the £200s.

ill probably be keeping it as long as im alive for the most part, its like a road legal go kart with cheap and plenty parts, i dont want to end up with 2 gtis that need to be welded by next year, id rather just focus on 1 and make it brand new again.

if the options are start again with a standard 106 gti for £3k+ then id rather go down the re-fab of the car ive got , shirley its not going to need 3k worth of welding?

plus if they do start fetching millions wink id hope to still have it by that time, when i get myself a job again ill be dropping a turbo in it for lulz.

OP you are not being silly, what you want to do is totally understandable and wholly possible within reason.

If you intend to keep the car long term and are willing to spend a grand or so then I see no issue with that.

You are going to need to know the extent of the rust before you go ploughing money into it though.

Some right drama queens around here.

Has the car got existing history of rust repairs from previous MOTs? It can often be more cost effective longterm to replace entire panels for example inner/out sills, arches etc than put some patches every few inches!!

A 106 GTI is bound to be increasing in price as they become rarer/older , I bet there were people saying scrap 205 GTIs a decade ago because they needed £200 worth of welding yet those cars have tripled in value since!!

OP just keep looking on the motorsports sites, things turn up from time to time.

You might find a rolling shell or you can just get an old rally car and break it for parts?
