RE: Shed Of The Week: Mazda MX-5
Discussion
A V8 MX5? Jesus wept, that'd be quite a machine in its own weird way.
I can't spanner at all though (lack of both skill and time), and that always puts me off these conversion jobs.
Oddly there was a BBR 150 MX5 for sale on here recently and it did have appeal - as said above, that's probably enough to just inject a bit more verve into the car which is what these need I think.
Out for a drive last weekend I got caught behind a van - he decided to really go for it, but in the corners the MX5 had way more pace. A straight came around and I went to pass and I ran out of road as he kept his foot in - a diesel Fiat Doblo van had the straight-line go to see off my 'sports car', and that really made me doubt the car.

PH ran this story the other day about one of the first Chevy LS3 conversions for the new MX-5:

There's a 525bhp option if the standard 430bhp isn't enough . Warrantied too.

You can get the same engine option for the Mk1, but it's a lot of money. There's a couple of V6 options that look more reasonable, but obviously a lot less horse power.http://www.pistonheads.com/news/ph-japanesecars/fl...

I have one of these sitting in a garage rust free that only needs a small amount of TLC to make it great again. Loved driving it as it was my second car. I really need to get it back on the road but I can't realistically afford to insure 2 cars
Not even a grand required to get it up to standard, new suspension, new tyres and a roof.

If you want a drive in drive out turbo conversion then might be worth giving these guys a call: http://www.g19engineering.com/I can't spanner at all though (lack of both skill and time), and that always puts me off these conversion jobs.

The v8 conversions are commonly spoken about in the US, flyin miata being the go to place to look at what they do to get it in there.
Straight line speed is not really what the car is about, a turbo will change that however. My friend got very used to hanging back and leaving a gap to the car in front before a corner, booting it as you enter the corner so you come up behind them as you exit the corner. When you pop out alongside them your already going faster then them so much easier to overtake and its harder for them to try and stop you.

Who'd want an MGB, Spitfire or similar when you can have this for £1000?
People who want to polish their cars and take them to classic car shows Having said that, some of these old MX5s appear to be complete rust buckets too.
I keep saying when I move next to a house with a double garage I'm going to get one of these from Goodwood Sports Cars http://www.goodwoodsportscars.co.uk/gallery.html
After he ran out of of good UK cars he's importing some lovely MX5s. Have a look at the undersides!

Have seen G19's name around, along with Skuzzle - maybe I should email. Any idea where G19 are? Quick google yields no address, nor does their own site, but Companies House says Ipswich?
MTech also do a drive in service in Wiltshire.http://mtechautomotive.co.uk/mx5-turbo-conversion/
For some reason i had it in my head they were in chippenham but exactly as you say i cant find any address other then the ipswich one. Facebook and the Nutz forum show the same too!
Here's a link to G19 on the nutz forum, the thread shows you the quality of the kit:

Nick from Skuzzle is very well known around the MX people and have only ever heard good things.
If you wanted to up the power without a turbo then you could try http://www.blinkmotorsport.com/

There I was on the verge of selling the '5, and now I'm going to 'charge it.
Any words of wisdom on seats? I was thinking buckets and harnesses, but the truth is I don't drive on track really at all - so I just want to be as low as possible and as far away from the roll bar as I can be.
As to insurance costs - I can only imagine your mods are what done it Vlad - mine, IIRC, didn't actually put the price up at all.
