there have been cases over the years of a few cars being nicked at car shows, as for being caught, they would not be driven on the public roads. more likely driven straight onto a trailer or into a lorry and driven away for someones collection or to sell overseas
nicked to order
There was one not too long ago where people were reporting sightings on social media and it got found pretty quickly.

Do people walk away and leave their show cars unattended at shows? Also wouldn't there be other people at the show "looking" at the Show cars?

Given that the main focus of interest at Car Shows is going to be the "Show Cars" it seems a bit of a risky place to start attaching suspicious packages to them smile

There was a show at Santa Pod last year I think and there were a few cars stripped of wheels and bumpers, I guess people thought it was the owner doing stuff on their own car.

The public car parks at these events are often full of very decent cars as well. Many of which are pretty much abandoned out of sight.

That's bit of a Daily Express reaction. These trackers are designed as theft *prevention* devices and have repeatedly been discussed and recommended here and elsewhere.
That seems to be working out well.

Yeah but it's a small community. I thought the point of show cars was looks not performance, so the only parts on the cars will be visual stuff that the community will spot?

If you try placing one of these ...

...on a Police car you are going to attract the attention of some scarier and far better armed people than some techy tea-leaves

100% a hoax
look at the size of the thing, and only held on with brown tape, the vibration of the car would shake it off, and if the car went over a puddle the water would weaken the tape
Also as people see number plates at car shows, they could trace the car that way
you can buy a small tracker from the US for $10 which is being used on bikes and cars in the US, uses very strong sticky pad and is very light, once its on, it is not coming off
I'm beginning to think 'hoax' too but for different reasons.

1: Photo quality is worse than potato-phone.
2: Terrible soldering and assembly. A PP3 clip costs pence.
3: What's the PP3 and the other PCB doing, anyway? Makes no sense.

The packaging is odd because a basic TK102 has a magnetic mount. Wrapping it in insulating tape then duct tape (note - NOT brown parcel tape!) would make the magnet less effective.

However, looking at photo #1 I think that's *inside* the car somewhere, so it's not going to fall off. Under boot floor near wheelarch, maybe? The square hole shouts 'trim-clip' to me.

The first thing they do when they get into your car is stick a tracker jammer to the cigar socket just in case you've fitted your own and it can't be seen. That blocks your own jammer.

maybe DanSI should stick his own tracker jammer into the car first - Tracker Tracker Jammed !

Looks like engine bay or behind boot trim, or somewhere? There wouldn't be much time to plant such a device in there without being spotted??

Well on the plus side, the only way someone could do that, is to physically get very close to your vehicle - so DONT LET THAT HAPPEN!! Stay around your vehicle at all times... or close all doors/boot/bonnet, if you need to leave vehicle unattended.

The old-skool, non-technical method of just tailing the car back home, still works best! biggrin
Note I don't frequent car shows, so that comment was in jest. wink

A higher class of car! I've only got a pleb's cigarette lighter socket. In the interests of oneupmanship, I now want a pipe lighter socket.

They'll have sent some poor mug into a small phone shop to buy a load of them I'd guess, I can't imagine it would be hard at all to get a payg SIM card without your details attached to it.
Not at all, all parts can be purchased online (anonymously)... in bulk !
You really think people still go into shops these days to buy things? biggrin

- The brown tape is only to securely hold the components together, plus adds water/splash protection.
- But if this is in an elevated position, or in the boot / interior, its not going to come into contact with rain anyway!
- A strong magnet on the inside of the packet should have no problem carrying its weight/holding tightly to a metal structure. But I cant say how a strong magnet might interfere with the electrical components.

I actually believe this is plausible - could even be attached externally, if the magnet is strong enough, on the underside of the vehicle.

So, you go to all that trouble, for some old Fords biggrin

I am joking, I do like old Fords, but never heard of this happening on more valuable stuff, perhaps a 200 grand 911 ?

What people havet done yet, and should probably think about, is install their own tracker in reaction to someone else putting a foreign one on.

Or maybe that was the plan all along and it's a viral thing from a tracker selling company

As said below, perps might be using a GPS jammer, and if they just drive the thing straight to the nearest port into a shipping container, it is gone.

A couple of years ago the Japspeed Impreza drift car was stolen from Santa Pod and just driven straight out of the place. Seems to be where all the dodgy stuff happens.

Can we find out what these idiots look like?

People at the show must have taken hundreds of photos of each of the more interesting cars. Maybe the guys who did this feature in a few of them? Lingering in the background, maybe even paying unusual attention to a wheel arch or whatever...Perhaps we could have a separate thread with as many pics as possible and see what we can see?

Just a thought...

I walk away and leave mine all the time - one of the things I think about now when deciding whether to do a show is what I'll be able to do all day, or will I just have to stand around until time to leave. I don't leave the bonnet and boot open though, nor leave the car unlocked - leaving the bonnet open just shows how little time I spend keeping it clean under there, and I've always been a bit suspicious of people swapping plug leads or other hilarious japes. A mate with a HS Chevette once had the Kenlowe adjuster turned up so he almost overheated in the queue on the way out of a show, courtesy of one comedian.

Still, I guess something like that could be attached underneath while someone was just checking out a detail or trying to see how clean it was underneath. There's always a bit of a lull sooner or later when there's no-one around - for example some of the shows have prizes, and that can attract a lot of people away from their cars to the prize-giving area, ample time for this stuff to be slipped into place.
