I have to store a car in the UK for 16 months and I live overseas (non-UK resident now). I am storing the car at a professional car storage facility.
(Stupid question?). Even if they have their insurance, should I get my own insurance on the car, on an agreed value laid up policy? The car will be on a SORN during this time.
I am (not surprisingly) having a hard time finding anyone to quote me. So far only Hagerty have at 225 pounds for 12 months.
Anyone with similar experience or recommendations?

Thank you

If it's correctly insured by the facility why would you need the cover?

In case the "facility" insurance isn't too good. Or they go tits up? Like a well known PH'er......

Both valid reasons.

I'd have thought any laid up policy that is prepared to accept him as a policyholder due to his residency would cover it.
Hagerty will be there or thereabouts I would have thought.

Thanks for the input. Another company quoted the same price, and another is asking for more details on the storage company's insurance because they want to make sure the car isn't covered twice or something like that. I am asking the company about their insurance so hope to get this resolved shortly.

Thanks

Hi Gordon,

If your chosen storage company is worth their salt then your car should be demonstrably insured fully comprehensively by them, to an agreed value and listed on the MID by them.

Ask to see confirmation of their insurance cover, if a condition of storage is that your car must be insured by you then, and it's up to you of course, I would walk away and find someone else.

I own a small specialist sports and classic car storage company and we insure all cars in our care fully comprehensively and at an agreed value. It's the only way I can sleep at night. Lay up cover isn't really needed and I don't think there's an advantage to you of doing so i.e. I don't think you earn NCD on a layup policy etc.

Check us out at www.perfectcarstorage.co.uk £99 per month inclusive of VAT

Best regards,

Simon

If it was in store, it wouldn't need any tp cover. It would just need accidental damage, fire and theft. And no need to be on the MID.

It would if the customer required the car to be exercised, recommended for long term lay-up.

Also, if both you and the facility are insured for the same risk, there is going to be a big problem working out who will pay out if there was a claim.

So, a quick update. The storage company has TPF&T coverage on the vehicles in storage, not accidental damage. Contacting various classic car insurance companies they will not insure for the same cover as the storage company. I asked for just accidental damage coverage and they don't do that.
Hmm. Not sure how to go about this now........

I would never trust someone else's insurance over my own.

If you've any doubts, do it yourself & know that it's properly covered.

I offer storage but ask owners to self insure as it is a nightmare otherwise. 24 hr cameras and a smart alarm system help with cover, but trying to keep all vehicles details and mods, value e.t.c. up to date is a job in itself.

I've just visited Bicester Heritage and got talking to these guys, http://www.historit.co.uk/?gclid=CL3By4qe4c4CFdUV0...

Not only are the cars stored in an air conditioned WW2 hanger the whole site is ring fenced with security guards 24/7.
The way I understood it the value of the car would be agreed on arrival and insured by the firm for that sum during storage. There was about 250 vehicles in that hanger and the MD new the exact total value,he would not say but it must have been 10`s of millions??
Something told me this facility did not come cheap.

They are about £35 per week but more if the car is over £150k.They are in a great position and the Storage. part is excellent plus they can exercise your can on the air strip which sounds like a great job.
