We hear it all the time, people moaning about the "soft touch plastics".

Along the exact same line, I'd say that there's a lot more to a car than how soft the leather feels. I wont bore people to death with a spec sheet, but just point out that the question about quality has been asked year in year out in the US, and those consumers are among the most picky in the world when it comes to service and quality.

If you havent seen it, check out the JD Powers surveys. Not just the current one, but have a look at results from years past. You'll see how some Mercedes models have been actually quite poor, but almost the single biggest constant, is that the Lexus LS dominates. Even the most jaded would have to admit, competing with manufacturers from around the world using all manner of quality systems, to consistently win, is not a bad effort.
And Subaru does quite well in the JD Power rankings, better than BMW but I'm under no illusions that the cabin quality of my NotImpreza rivals that of an M3! My dad used to own a Lexus LS and it was quite nice, but nowhere near his new S500 in cabin quality and general design
As I mentioned before, design isn't just about how soft the leather is. A car is made up of thousands of parts, beyond just the bits you can see and feel.

Is it of much use to have the worlds best interior if you're stuck by the side of the road with an engine that's given up?

If I was in the Bentley, I'd have sent Jeeves off down the road to get help as I sat in the massaged heated rear seat whilst sipping a lovely G&T from the drinks cabinet biggrin;)

Why the tangential discussion about a Lexus? The article is about a Bentley.
If you look at what I posted up front, you'll notice I referenced MB, Audi, BMW and Lexus. Others have then posted about the LS specifically, and I've subsequently agreed.

Why didn't you jump on the OTHER poster who specifically referred to the LS first?

Or are you just trolling?

I've been driving Bentley's for over 30 years & got stranded once, 1992 in a Continental T, with a puncture. Hardly the car's fault!

Most issues with these in my experience is stuff that doesn't leave you stranded, it's things not working, rattles etc & even that is less prevelant these days.

Some of the posts on here are like the comments section in a Daily Mail article about a crashed expensive car.

"I dont know why anyone would buy a car that can do more than 70 mph"

"Must have more money than sense"

"My Kia Rio is all the car anyone could ever need, I bet that doesnt do 38 mpg and have 7 year warranty"

We need to look at things from, as mentioned, the perspective of someone who has a huge amount of money and mixes in a world where that is the norm, sure it is huge, expensive, a bit odd looking, thirsty and flash but most wouldnt drive a Fiesta if they had that money, and most welathy people dont drive Old Merc E Class estates and LandRovers, maybe the odd eccentric landowner but the vast majority buy nice, new stuff.

Sadly whilst it is no doubt a work of art and craftsmanship, to me it is too ugly. Even with a Euromillions win I would not buy one.

Er, did they employ the main stylist from Mitsuoka for this one or something?
The ones that make Jag knock offs based on Micras ?

Er, dont think so, that is not a "pretty" front end but it has presence and gravitas in spades, regal, imposing, menacing even, separate and distinct, could only be a Bentley, every inch a modern evolution of how Bentley front ends looked in the past, magnificent.
The front looks fine to me. The rear 3/4 on the other hand looks like a knock-off copy. And I generally really like Bentleys.

Fantastic PH. That Maybach is hideous as all of them are. Imagine paying nearly £100k for a stretched naughties S-Class, you'd have to be barking mad or have such a serious taste problem that driving (or being driven) around in that tragedy is the least of your problems! The Bentley is the perfect antidote to that monstrosity, some might not like the styling but if you have £100k to splash on a statement four door saloon then its that or a early Phantom and the Bentley is so much cooler. Imagine wafting around the great Britsh countryside in that, I imagine it would be very nice. Personally I would have a XJR or a Maserati but anything is better than a Maybach! Spend shed money on a big Citroen and literally set fire to £97k of cash and you'd still be a better person than a Maybach buyer. I really can't believe that dealers touch them, but there must be a market for them, which is truly unfortunate, money can't buy taste and all.

Well this is all most amusing. Someone at the start said:

If you're in the market for a Bentley citing a Lexus as an alternative is like... Well it's just wrong. The alternative to a Bentley is another Bentley or a Rolls..

And I entirely agree. I own a Lexus LS400 and I'd lose all my faith in progress if a modern Bentley wasn't, well, massively better. It's ok. It's big and comfy and relatively quiet below 70, but it handles terribly - frankly it's a monumental disappointment after years of Jags.

And it is absolutely never in a million years going to exude class.

As someone else says, passers by never wonder who it is that drives an S class.
