The clio is a fun car. It won't set your pants on fire in a straight line but with decent tyres it will keep you amused in the corners.

Wow, I just got a quickquote on that.. Insurance would be 4800 for the year!

I'm swaying more towards the clio, as I think it looks nicer.. Would you not recommend the Vauxhall?

R53 cooper s, I had one at 19 and insurance wasn't stupid.

Fast enough for me to bin it into a van shortly after too....

You'll probably ignore this but get something reasonably sensible and cheap if you haven't had anything with more than 100 horsepower so far. Do some advanced driving lessons till you're 21 and get something with a bit more power.

I'd go for the Clio 197 too. Just because I like them. Haven't driven an 197 but I'd guess 197 bhp musst be adequate.
Clios in general are nice little cars.
I have just driven my new (to me) Golf 4 GTI that I haven't driven i a week or two and was again surprised how well it went!

I'd also have a look at Golf GTI of whatever vintage floats you boat. Truly great all-round cars!

..and the lack of straight line speed means OP might keep their license easier than with a Megane even if the Megane is technically the 'better'(? debatable) car.

Loads of options though, Suzuki Swift Sport, plenty of mk5 GTIs (just a good one might be like a needle in a haystack), Fiat Panda 100hp, Abarth Punto.

Yup, perhaps a bit less poke for a first > 100 PS car? If you can, try a Swift Sport, not really quick but really good fun IMO. 5k should be plenty for a good one. Also pretty decent standard equipment if that matters.

Clio is a great car. Small, Nippy, still reasonable on mpg on a gentle cruise

Clio if you want a raw driving experience and brilliant handling. Corsa if you want straight line performance and something easier to drive day-to-day.

Try both and see which you prefer. Would have to be the Clio for me. They're brilliant to drive and make every car journey an engaging one. Nice as the Corsa's are I'm really not a fan of Vauxhalls and they're just a bit bland IMO.

350Z's can be had for under £5k.

ETA, bugger 4 seat requirement. Do you really need 4 seats? :P

Honda Integra Type-R ?
SEAT Leon FR ? Or SEAT Ibiza FR if you want a little more compact.

(Substitute 'FR' for 'CUPRA' if you want even greater performance, at a slightly higher purchase price).
Will not be able to outperform the petrol variant, but the Diesels will return 50+mph on the FR's.

There's also a limited edition Leon with K! styled bodykit, although not with the blistering performance.
So looks the chit, but cheap on insurance and fuel. Could by "Stylance" or something, I forget.

clio trophy is a good shout. quite rare and meant to be one of the best hot hatches.

unless you really need 4 seats i'd get an mx5.

It's true and I was the same. Nobody could have told me any different. What you quickly learn however, is that it actually impresses other blokes your age at best! Any girl shallow enough to like you for your car only cares that it's expensive or a premium brand. In which case the cheapest BMW would beat the most poised and thoroughbred Clio.
