I was in the same position a few years ago and went with an Integra, great fun and much rarer than the civic type r. My first years insurance at 20 was £1900, now down to a measly £400 at 23!

that's pretty st tbh. if it was me at that age I'd just buy something more insurance friendly like a clio GT, fiesta zetec s, or twingo RS. That's £2000-2500 of insurance money you are never going to see back.
Me too. I paid around 1200 on a hot hatch at 21 and actually it was fun, but really a waste of money. The fun could have been had with something less grunt. You will never believe it when you're that age though.
shout OP, LISTEN TO THIS!

Don't waste your money just yet getting bent over by insurance companies. - You can have just as much fun driving a slower car if you choose the right one. I waited until I was about 24 before I bought anything "sporty" (plus I didn't crash) and at 27 can now insure pretty much anything; my Discovery with £thousands of declared modifications is c£350 and the Mini JCW is about £450 (with a much higher annual mileage).

A clio 197 isn't actually that fast (you're always going to come across someone in the latest leased German 0-60 machine) so you might as well just concentrate on getting something that's actually fun to drive.

My 20 year old son just got a 140 bhp Astra Sri Sportshatch in white, looks a bit like a VXR, pick it up tomorrow.

Ok, its a Vauxhall but it drives ok to be fair, keep it a couple of years and three years NCD at 22 then he can get what he really wants, insurance for the Astra was £986 with one years NCD on a Citroen C1, so he has doubled the power output, plenty for now, I think we all should go through the ranks rather than skinning ourselves to run something we can handle or afford, am sure he could handle say a Type R but I think it is better to work up to it rather thanhave to bog of a jump in power, if nothing else you dont peak too early !

Pretty good advice that I would say, I probably would have taken no notice when I was a yoof, but in hindsight, this all over!

Just get something with decent handling and the best balance of poke / insurance cost and you're sorted for a few years.

Thanks for the suggestions everyone, taken all in to consideration and have been getting insurance quotes as I've been going along.. All around 2-2500 for the year which isn't to bad!
The difference age makes...

If somebody told me my insurance would be £2k on a hot hatch, I'd puke hehe

If it makes you feel any better mate, in a few years time the quotes will drop dramatically and anything over £800 a year will seem stupidly expensive.

On a side note; when you hit 21, you'll be eligible for most classic car insurance policies. Then you can start looking at older, but really fun cars that don't cane the insurance.
it is amazing how cheap insurance is in the UK. god how I miss that

I was that age and had that budget a few years back. Bought an E46 330Ci. Not the most inspiring choice, possibly a bit of an "old man's car" if you're looking at hot clios, but after french stuff it was really enjoyable.

231bhp usually feels quick at that age
