Going to the breakers yard (a rare thing in itself nowadays) and getting bits from higher spec models to fit to your lower spec model.
Interior lights, fancy trim etc.

They don't even stack the cars now, they are all on racks! Nearly impossible to tip them now!

Single wipers
DTM Exhausts
DTM mirrors

(I would still put them on a mk2 Golf if I still messed about them!)

When the front wings on your Mini rusted away you could fit a front hinged (Triumph Herald style) fibreglass replacement.

NCAP? Pah!

Starsky and Hutch stripes

When Starsky And Hutch was first on TV a guy who lived a few doors down from me did this to his MK3 Cortina we used to think it was the coolest thing on the road...couldn't say I ever saw him dive across the bonnet though.

Three spokes were awful even then, think there was a hot Saab that had them at the time as standard
I think we might have to disagree on that one wink

Also, as demonstrated in that pic, does anyone put wind-deflectors on cars anymore, either for the sunroof or front windows?

I nominate the red reflective tailgate panel, specified by the first owner of my 205 GTI, from the dealer accessory brochure which was a popular mod back in the very early '90's.

I always liked the Morette / Hella look when I was younger and ended up buying a Renault 5 GT Turbo, with a set already fitted, as my first performance car. As a result, I've had a set of Morette's on my 205 GTI since '09 - purely for the retro '90's look of course and in no way to relieve my teenage years hehe

(Note - o.e front bumper and trim has since been sourced and fitted after that photo was taken a few years ago).

A red light tucked away above the rear diff.
Never heard of that one I'm only a youngen though, what was the purpose if any
Twas a 70s thing, you lifted the rear fo the car with new spring shackles, rear axle become visible so putting a red light on top of the axle was legal and uh "looked cool".

This was the stuff of dreams back then:

What ever happened to fido dido and "on a mission" stickers ?

Can't remember the last time I saw an aftermarket stereo in a car either.

What about modifying bonnets to wrap over the headlights a bit too ? like this ?

Exhausts with upswept tips, known as "DTM" style at the time.

I had a Ford Anglia with scallops.
Nowt wrong with scallops on the right car, been done since the 50s, one of those things that never really seems to go out of style.

Crafty, where is that second picture, is it near Manchester I seem to remember being taken to some car meet there by my dad back in the late seventies, remember the big industrial building, somewhere Stockport way ?
