Convertible drivers - why keep the roof up?

They don't want people to see their beer belly and bald spot?
My ex had an MX5 and we went places with the roof down almost all the time, apart from built up areas, especially driving through Edinburgh. Stop at a set of lights there's about 30 people standing right next to you peering in the car, you can't hold a conversation because of the noise, you're exposed to said people's crap (some of those people are weak people and get jealous very easily. Spitting was known to happen).
So roof was 100% of the time up any time in a built up area. Get out of the city though and it came down almost every time, even rain or snow.
Wow, it never occurred that people would spit at an MX-5. A Porsche or something equally expensive/valuable, maybe. Fair point, I can understand that then.My ex had an MX5 and we went places with the roof down almost all the time, apart from built up areas, especially driving through Edinburgh. Exactly my thoughts too! It's only an MX5 but I suppose to the great unwashed it's a convertible sports car. They don't understand it's older, cost a couple of grand etc. they just see a convertible sports car.
Either that or the two people in it having a proper laugh and giggle hit a nerve, I don't know as I thought like you, it's no Porsche. However, what is funny is that my Dads Porsche got referred to as a Ferrari a couple times so maybe people just bump cars up the desirability ladder automatically.
I miss her actually. Her curving lines, ample hips, the way she felt in my hands and the way she could stoke a part of my soul no one else has done before.
Oh and the ex was sort of alright I suppose

Exactly. It's no-one else's business whether we choose to have the hood up or down.
Do you Mr OP get curious and perhaps a little indignant when you see other drivers choosing to have their windows down when yours are up? Or not playing music on the radio. Or having their lights on when you don't? Or wearing a red jumper when you are wearing a blue one?
It's called "freedom of choice".
Wow, major sense of humour failure. Seriously? Give over...Do you Mr OP get curious and perhaps a little indignant when you see other drivers choosing to have their windows down when yours are up? I have an MX5, if it came as a fixed roof coupe, I'd have bought one instead.
I very rarely put the roof down, because I feel like a tt and you can hear people calling you a tt!
Pffft! Nonsense, who cares what people think! I've been told I drive a "hairdresser's car" more often than I can count - those same people then grudgingly admit the car looks great. I'v never heard 1 person calling me a tt. Mind you, with the wind noise I wouldn't Besides, I've always got a smile on me face driving the MX...I have an MX5, if it came as a fixed roof coupe, I'd have bought one instead.

I haven't either, but I do hope and pray I don't pull up next to a van full of builders with the roof down!
I'll probably have the roof more often now, I've had a new mohair roof installed, which drops in seconds, whereas my old one had a window that had to be unzipped and was a faff. But I do admit to feeling a bit self conscious in built up areas with the roof down. Maybe a bright red convertible isn't the right car for me!
You'll get used to it. Just enjoy it for what it is. At the minute, you might have people staring at you wondering why you have the roof up! The point is that it is no-one else's business what you chose to do with your own car. If you want the hood down, fine. If you want the hood up, fine. Nothing to do with anyone else, it's your choice.
The point is, I was asking why they choose not to. Genuine question. Plenty have chosen to answer, and taken it in the light hearted spirit it was intended. The point is that it is no-one else's business what you chose to do with your own car. I'm keeping the roof up on mine (and drinking no alcohol) for the next two weeks because I was bitten by a fking tick and am now on antibiotics that mean the sun will bring me out in a painful rash .
Annoying as fk considering the weather is perfect for a roadster.
So:
Q:Why is the roof up?
A:Medical reasons.
How truly galling, given the weather this week...Annoying as fk considering the weather is perfect for a roadster.

Slightly off tack but driving with the roof down on a summer night in the dark is a real joy
No idea why but just found it a real treat and must do it more
Any night really. Driving under a starry sky is quite something. I drove back from somewhere in the dark last winter - cold but I have heated seats and a hat! Magical. No idea why but just found it a real treat and must do it more

ooh, an R129? I was thinking about 1 of those before I bought the MX5. Very nice too.
It's great, no sports car but the feel good factor is immense. Looks like I'm going to have to sell it and go back to a tin top as I've lost my garage space. Either that or one of those folding metal roof jobbies but none of them within budget really appeal.

that's one of the other things I love about the SLK - came with 'magic sky', well it's all dark and miserable flip a switch and the roof goes clear, if you've got sun-burn from having the roof down too often it is opaque
Smart...Sadly the SLKs I could afford were quite old the roof motor going was a common issue (Might be on modern ones too, I dunno!). Ari said:
I was only thinking the other day that we've got almost through summer without one of these ridiculous annual posts!
On a more serious note though, I saw a Range Rover the other day driving on a road. What's the point of an offroader if you don't drive it offroad?
I think someone said both of those things already on page 1 or 2. On a more serious note though, I saw a Range Rover the other day driving on a road. What's the point of an offroader if you don't drive it offroad?
