No, as it makes no sense.

I have 5 seats and a big boot because they are an absolute necessity in order to fulfil my regular transportation requirements in my circumstances. Under what circumstances is top down motoring or having your own swimming pool an absolute necessity for daily life?
My regular transportation requirements are not met by a hard top car.
So your car couldn't get you and your stuff where you need to go without a soft top?

I'm talking about an absolutely necessary function of any vehicle, transporting the required amount of people and their luggage to where they need to go. Anything else isn't a necessity, it's a perk.

The internet arguments get rather daft at times.
Thanks for the insight. Any particular reason you felt the need to comment?

If you install a swimming pool at home, it is also full of what you call compromises: more costs, more maintenance, etc. But according to you, "because of the compromises" you can't understand why the owners wouldn't swim in it every day...
If it was nice weather it would make sense to use the pool. In the same way if it is nice weather it makes sense to take the roof off if you use the car (though my roof lives in the boot in any event)

To be fair, they do. Better to just agree to disagree sometimes.

I totally agree that things can get silly, but as long as it doesn't descend into name calling or offensive posting I don't see it as a problem personally or understand why people feel the need to comment. Plenty of threads on here to keep everyone amused surely?

Yes, but on a sunny day, the owner of said pool could still decide to visit friends, go to a park, damn it, just sit by his pool drinking a cool beer, whatever, without having to endure the lambasting that some open-roof zealots are dishing out here...

Why on earth do we have to justify why we don't drive around with our roof down all the time???

Live and let live.

Again, you need to appreciate that other people's lifestyles are different to your own.

Maybe you should try the same - then you could leave us to drive around with our roof shut in peace.

I can't understand why he wouldn't want to swim in at every opportunity no, otherwise it just seems lazy, wasteful and more likely it's only there so he can tell people he has a swimming pool. Also, the question would need to include wht else could he have had instead of a swimming pool.

You have some very odd ideas. smile

I can't think of anyone who would be impressed by the fact someone has a swimming pool.

Similarly with cars, hardly bragging rights to have a convertible.

God forbid he was wealthy enough to have a swimming pool, a tennis court and a fitness room - he'd be obliged to use each of them all the time, to meet your draconian standards!

I despair at the number of people who think people buy things "just so that they can tell people about it"... smacks of dreadful jealousy!

Live and let live! Don't worry about why someone else has or does something...

Off topic but regarding "wasteful", the villa next to my home in Portugal is owned by a chap from Canada. He visited it for the first time in 6 years two months ago - having bought it off-plan originally. It has a swimming pool and a lovely Mercedes SL convertible parked in the basement garage. That too, he drove for the first time while he was here; I'm told by the company that looks after his holiday home that he ordered it when he bought the place.

He was there for 3 days.

Apparently it could be years before he returns!

Wasteful? To most, yes, I'm sure. But clearly he has the means and can afford to have homes like this scattered around the World on the off-chance he feels like visiting one. To him, it probably is no more wasteful than owning several watches when he only really needs one to tell the time. Different financial means, different compromise realities, different choices!

I recall the tale of a friend who asked someone why he hardly ever visited his 20,000 acre grouse moor - 'do you have a chess set at home?' he said - 'and when did you last use it?'.

Different strokes.

In Brighton recently, hot day, roof down, seafront was packed. Just coming up to the lights where you turn right to drive down the front and a seagull dropped a huge load of st all over my shirt, down my neck, in my hair and over the the alcantara seat. The lights changed and I had to drive slowly, through all the traffic along the seafront with people taking pics of us and the car whilst covered in wet bird crap.

Council Baby was in the passenger seat and didn't get a single splash of it, completely dry. Jammy git.

Just because you don't understand it doesn't make it a poor analogy (certainly as several others have taken you up on your reactions to it, so it would seem it wasn't that bad).

What I don't understand is why it seems so important to you to prove that unless you are driving your car with the roof down, you are wasteful, lazy etc etc...

Why do you care so deeply about this?

I understood it just fine, it just doesn't hold water IMHO for the reasons given (pardon the pun) smile

I said it seems lazy or a waste from my perspective not to drop the roof on a convertible when the weather is amenable to it in the UK as opportunities to do so are increasingly limited IME and wondered why people don't. The response from many seems to be a defensive 'how dare you ask, why should I justify myself to you' which is of course absolutely fine, but not an answer to the question. I don't understand why my asking the question seems to be bothering people so much, but then this is the internet.

I personally couldn't care less about it as have no personal stake in this whatsoever not being the owner of a convertible at present, and I have come to my own conclusions about them through my own experience.

TBH with threads such as 'which car has the dimmest dials' and rants about cyclists this was the only thread in which I had any genuine interest in the responses to and as I'm stuck at home with a mystery illness a bit of back and forth with you chaps is more interesting than watching more TV.

Anyway, 'live and let live' and all that. Keep on enjoying your cars in any way you see fit guys, I'm just some bloke on t'internet with my own view that clearly doesn't tally with yours.
