Maybe the other two are only used when a bypass is opened in sports/noisy mode or something like that? With the old R32, one pipe was valve controlled and less dirty than the other, but at least it actually functioned as a tailpipe!
If i got one it would be straight down to milltek for a proper exhaust system and to have the engine bay speaker disconnected

Golf R estate - 2 of the pipes are not even connected to the back box.

The exhaust is as much about looks as it is performance. And that looks great as well as going like st off a stick.Next up you'll say you can't have sporty looking kits on cars with a CC of less than 4L? Or wheels bigger than 13" on anything FWD?
This is the 21st century. Customers are paying considerably more for a car now than ever and expect a certain level of quality finish.
You can't put a stainless steel exhaust on a mass produced car and sell it for a price the customer feels comfortable paying. Hence they put trims on them to make them look nice but be reasonable to buy the car and replace the exhaust.
These days things like alloys and a nice looking exhaust are expected on pretty much all cars. I think the manufacturers have come up with good ways of making the arse end of cars look symetrical without having to fit a grands worth of exhaust to it.
With regards to the number of tail pipes - They don't mean anything. I don't agree with them having nothing behind them but in a lot of cases, the number of and position of tailpipes is indicative of the model?
The Golf R sets itself apart from the GTi this way in the same way the BMW M cars set themselves apart from 6 pots, and 4 pots and turbo's and NA's all by the tail pipe patterns.
Why should we in the 21st century settle for a cock eyed single piece of crap hanging off the back of a car because it's not attached to a V8?
I don't recall seeing any complaints on here about the Civic's equally high tailpipe count.

I got no problem with quads provided they're practical.I don't recall seeing any complaints on here about the Civic's equally high tailpipe count.
The Ricer looks like a laser-equipped tranformatron, and needs to have multitubes. I have it on reliable advice the outer one of each pair fires out a stream of Uzi-equipped sharks...
