Have another thread running on company car and basically came to the conclusion to take a brand spanking new Audi A6 diesel would not make any financial sense for me.

Therefore I have decided I have upto 15k to spend on a fun car.

Here is my criteria..

Low depreciation,

Fast and fun.

Motorway MPG must be higher than 30 mpg but other than that nice big engines are a plus.

Are high mileage Porsche Caymans a good bet?

I don't know about the mpg, but my first thought is a tidy E46 M3, or E39 M5.

I have a 2008 Audi TTS that is my daily that i think fits the bill.

Purchase price in May 2014 £13k, Current value prob £10.5k. So £2.5k depreciation in two and bit years and 25k miles

Mpg wise it is averaging entire life 31.5

Sorry forgot to add

Would prefer an Auto.

I have had 3 series and 5 series and 6 series in the past (although not the M version) so looking to move away from those models.

This is nowhere near your car of interest I'm sure, given the previous posts - but I decided that instead of a brand new Focus ST I'd buy a '63 plate, for about £11k less than what the first owner paid for it smile

I'll still get a fair bit of deprecation I'm sure, but it's depreciated to almost half price before I bought it and is still under warranty biggrin

Tough to get a nice one these days for 15k.

OP, why 30mpg? What sort of mileage per annum are you thinking you will do?

auto, fun, 15k, quick, I would suggest Cayman or Boxster. No need to be buying high mileage with your budget.

It would be a 370z for me too. Great value. Otherwise a nice slk55 should be within reach and I doubt you'd lose much if anything over a few years. You might struggle with you mpg ambitions though

I haven't looked recently, but a year or so you could... so that would suggest they are going up in money? Or it could just be summer bumping their value up.

2005/7 Mustang. Bought mine 2 1/2 years/12,000 miles ago @ 14.5k, spent 1.5k sold 3 months ago for 16.5k. Nudged into the 30s on a run (going down to the centre of France hit 33/34mpg). Not a huge engine (only 4.6), sounds great with the right exhaust (or quite quiet with the standard).

I only do about 10k miles per annum- but for 2 weeks a month my commute is 50miles roundtrip on m25 hence why I thought 30mpg may be a good shout.

Thinking about it more - it doesn't really matter as my private fuel will get paid so essentially paying only 40% for my fuel.

What are older porkers going to be like for maintenance?

More expensive than a new porsche.

This. You criteria is slightly confusing - you want a car which will be cheap on fuel and depreciation, but is likely to be far more expensive to maintain than a modern car. It tends to be older cars that depreciate the least.

Elise is a great shout and likely to be the cheapest overall car suggested so far. However, for a curveball how about a GT86 - it will depreciate quicker than an old Porsche, but is likely to be cheaper to maintain and run over say a 5 year period.

Or, an even better curveball - buy the car you want, over analyse the financials of car ownership too much and you'll be driving a 5yr old Kia.

Z4MC, had mine almost two years and might have gone up in value slightly, fast and fun and will just get 30mpg on a run if you are light on the throttle.

Another thought here - try a C5 Corvette, surprisingly good on fuel, very quick, handle well and (nearly) depreciation proof
