I've been looking for the same thing with a budget of 20k for a lower mileage car and considered the 370Z and Cayman. I don't do more than about 5k miles per year but the Gen2 2.9 Cayman seemed to strike a good balance between performance and running costs even so. Can you get a decent higher mileage one for 15K I wonder?

Nothing against the 370z but the 350z depreciated horribly. Are the 370s really alot better?
Bottom line, yes.
I was after a cheap runabout so was looking for a 350z. They were pretty cheap inside. Didn't really like the rear.
370 is a far nicer looking car. Lighter, more powerful and better finished than the 350.
To drive it was a beast of a car, rear visibility is awful as is the tiniest stone rattling off the huge tyres because if the lack of sound proofing. Bit of a pain with speed bumps too.
For me I much preferred it to my E46 m3s, and my wife didn't like driving it. Which is a good thing.
The synchro rev is brilliant. Let's you enjoy a manual box but easily change gear like Colin McRae.
I only sold it to buy a house.
If you get bored spend £7000 on a Stillen supercharger install and your at 520 plus bhp.

If it was me and you were wanting to steer away from BMWs why not look at cars with AMG badges. You'd get a decent CLS 55 for around £15k along with a few other models, automatics too.

Then again I am a bit of a Merc fan so can only advise from my experience.

This is what I am leaning towards most as well....

I have driven both the 350Z (Convertible) and 370Z. Had both of them for a week at a time and while they are very good cars in their own right- for me personally I didn't get as much sense of occasion as I would have liked.

I do really like the AMGs and would love to have a really big n/a engine- as fuel costs are going to be at a 60% or so discount for me it makes sense for me to do this now rather than later.

CLS's seem really good value but I actually don't need a 4 door car so still steering towards SLK 55's - I have never owned a convertible either so this will scratch 2 itches in one go...

Nope. Neither am i. However the original post i was responding to was that you couldnt buy a Golf R for the OPs budget. You can
Well done. Thanks for the amazing contribution. Just to please your obvious pedantry:

There are not many examples of golf R's available at 15k so your options will be limited.
Sorry if proving you wrong when you were trying to be a smart ass offended you.

Just on the 370Z - we paid £19,750 retail purchase for our 9K miles 2 year old GT last May.

Roll forward to today and we've just accepted a £18,000 trade bid for the car today with an extra 15K miles on it.

Does seem expensive for 15 months driving bearing in mind thats a walk away trade price we're selling it at.

Well tone down the internet aggression then. You would do it in a pub with a stranger, so dont do it on here. wink

You were pulled on being a smart ass but being wrong. Deal with it and move on.

I know you said move away from BMW's but how about an Alpina?

http://www.pistonheads.com/classifieds/used-cars/b...

Rare, cool, unlikely to depreciate much and 50MPG with a 0-60 of 6.9 seconds. I love the changes they make to things like the steering wheel as they make it feel special, the engine is a cracker for a 4 cylinder and Alpina's sport suspension is much better judged than BMW's M-Sport setup.
