Good looking (if slightly impractical) beast.

I'd take the charging numbers with a very large pinch of salt.

350kW, even using 400v 3 phase is nigh on 1000 amps. That will present some engineering and logistical challenges - for example, how will the average person pick up the cable and plug it in? You could decrease the current by jacking up the voltage, but then it will probably get a bit interesting in the rain...

Wireless charging at 350 kW? Hmmm, I wouldn't like to stand within a 100 meters of that - it would probably turn the air to plasma.

Thought I'd seen that shape, cockpit position and rear end treatment before:

Mercedes-Benz AMG Vision Gran Turismo Concept

So whilst still very beautiful to these eyes, it's not nearly as ground-breaking as it first might seem.

i'll take the Mazda version, thanks.
So would I if given the choice. That is sensational. Of course it is also vastly smaller which means it will be fun as well as looking good.

Thank you for doing the maths. Charging does seem implausible. Perhaps battery swap is the way to go.

But the Tesla S is exciting.

Well, except that it isn't, exciting that is!

FAST? Yes, very, but actually exciting, er no, not by a long shot.

EFFICIENT? Yes, very, but ruthless efficiency is boring

In the S, you just stamp you foot to the floor and BLAM, you're doing 60. No fuss, no drama, and critically, little interaction and no skill requirement.

You're welcome to disagree, but for me, i'd rather drive something like a 320d (manual), which despite being heaps slower, requires the driver to drive, rather than just direct................

Please tell me the span of blue display across the dash and doors is all touch screen and would "blip" with a widening pond ripple away from your finger tip when you touch it.... Please!

Very odd that not in the comments, nor in the article, the Excellero was mentioned.

Yes, I did mention the Exelero..
Npe still prefer the one in the article - I love the slightly creepy needle tooth grin it has going. Like some sort of shark/baleen whale/gangsta coupe cross breed.

I can understand wanting to drive an atom or caterham, but not a slightly refined diesel rep mobile

You'd rather drive a manual 320d, than a Tesla Model S.

Because there's an extra pedal and a gearstick?
yes. precisely.

Once the novelty of "blasting off the lights" has worn off, which, unless you are 12, happens after a day or so, the Tesla S is a really boring car. In a 320d i can enjoy a perfectly matched heal and toe downshift even when sat in traffic at 3 mph.

The Tesla is, imo, the ultimate in "white goods". Once you have one, all you really want is the next better one, much like getting an iphone6 or whatever, imo.

Don't get me wrong i don't "hate" the Tesla, quite the opposite it's a fantastic car, but what it isn't is "exciting" just because it is fast!

While I'm inclined to agree, it is exciting not because it's fast but because it's so ludicrously fast (pun intended).

But, because of the way it gathers speed and the drivetrain, it needs that kind of acceleration to be anywhere near exciting, while an elise is much more exciting taking twice as long to 60.

I'm no purist and certainly not a luddite, but this car just screams for at least a V12.

In fact, with that bonnet, make it an I12.

Why the ridiculously long bonnet when there is no engine!?

It seems strange to me that designers aren't making better use of the advantages in size and packaging of electric motors on blank sheet, full electric cars like these.

Indeed. Next time you're in a traffic jam try an select 1st whilst rolling without heal and toeing and report back!

With H&T you can go from slow rolling in 2nd, into even slower rolling in 1st without your passengers even noticing. In most modern cars, the gap between 1st and 2nd is now huge (because a low 1st is needed to meet gradability targets at GVW, and 2nd needs to be high enough to clip 62mph in it to get a good 0-62mph time!)

Well, if you want to bring handling into the equation then i'm even more likely to want to drive the 320d! it's a MUCH better/more exciting handling car than the (quite grippy but very conservatively setup) Tesla.
