You really believe that?

Wasn't there a discussion on here a few months ago about raising the motorway limit to 80mph? Wasn't the consensus that if this were done, people would travel at 90 mph rather than than the 80 mph they currently do?
It is a matter of significant jurisprudential debate over the centuries. Plenty of books out there if you want to read up on it.

Simply put, if laws are just they are obeyed by the majority.
Or, the flipside of the argument is:

People are mostly basically decent, and most don't need laws to stop them being assholes or to stop them endangering other people.

People just doing what they think is morally right don't usually cross the line of laws even if they are ignorant of them.
What about careless/inconsiderate driving?
Every driver falls foul of it, even the best from time to time.

Your mind seems to be made so I doubt you will be vacating your ivory tower any time soon regardless of how persuasive other internet randoms' viewpoint may be.

People speed for any number of reasons but I'm sure you know that really.

For the record I have a clean license and have never been pulled over by the police.

Oh yeah and speed isn't dangerous. It's the sudden stopping that is the problem. smile

In relation to the stopping, did you even read my op?

Because a lot of roads have stupid speed limits which were suitable 30yrs ago when cars were less well engineered.

I believe there is such a thing as sensible speeding and I do condone it, I do not however agree with driving on public roads like a track day which I also see often.
Cars might be better, but the drivers are not...........................

That's some leap from exceeding the limit

The ivory tower from which you are decrying at least one PH member to be a moron.

To be honest no, I didn't read your OP. I got bored part way through and skipped straight to the comments. It seemed to be an extension to your rolleyes post on the "have you exceeded the speed limit by more than 50%" thread.

I'm shocked. Seriously, I'm shocked.

Tell us about your indiscretions, Vonhosen, we won't tell anyone else.

Just an example of another offence that otherwise decent people commit.
Also rebuts the position that if the majority commit the offence it's automatically bad law.

I don't even regard it as speeding. I drive at what I think is an appropriate speed for the conditions. Something I've learnt after 40 years of driving.

Shocked?
You shouldn't be.
I'll keep the details to myself thanks, just suffice to say I fall foul now & then as every driver does.
All that differs is how far & often we all fall from grace, but we all do fall because a perfect driver doesn't exist.

I like driving at a speed where my attention is fully engaged.

I think the dangers from driving at high speeds are overstated, but they do exist.

So, I've made the decision to drive quickly, on a daily basis...fully in the knowledge that it is more dangerous.

Some people smoke, some drink lots, I drive fast.

So I had people telling me not to go through an amber light on the st driving thread and now there is a poster saying not to speed.

I had to double check I was on the right website - some real anal types on here, who in the absence of rules would be unable to function as common sense has passed them by.

CORRECT
There's no pride, it's just another "white good" that gets you from A to B in comfort while you make a few calls, text, check and post on face book or twitter.

I guess you never read the moron's thread, or my original post. Therefore, how can you really comment?

People know that careless/inconsiderate driving is wrong, and why it's wrong.

Just because it's the law doesn't automatically make it right either.

So, you think the best judge of an appropriate speed is to simple follow the number written on a small metal sign? This is even more stupid than people who just want to do 100mph everywhere........

Yet we all still manage to do it. As I said, just because everybody does it legislating against doesn't make it bad law (& you appear to agree with me on that).

Not it doesn't automatically make it right, but I don't think speed limits are an unreasonable measure for a government to impose as part of a compromise for all interested parties. They are a step that are used all over the world.
