I'm sure the OP said small cars
When has an XF been small yikes or a 3 series spin
Small luxo something with decent suspension like a Citroen GS

I test drove a Jaguar XE today and was quite impressed. It was the 163bhp 2.0 litre diesel engined one. In terms of ride quality it was spot on. Surprisingly, kick-down for overtaking was impressive.

A couple of let-downs though: the diesel clatter was very noticeable and there was some tyre noise intrusion into the cabin. Also the soundproofing wasn't that great as you could hear other traffic very easily on a busy A-road at 50mph.

But I couldn't fault the ride quality. The size was perfect for me, but I'd struggle to live with the level of noise intrusion into the cabin.

You can thank the never ending CO2 targeting for the noise- less soundproofing (lower weight) and lighter materials let through more noise.

Somebody else on PH also tried the XE, he had it whilst his older XF was in for a service and he said the same as you if I remember correctly. I didn't try it as it was too small inside.

K12 Micra or Note!

I sometimes drive my sisters Note and am always impressed with the comfort of the thing. Decent NVH supression, a little floaty ride, automatic gearbox and a muted but lacklustre engine. Then I drove a K12 Micra and found it was also fairly comfortable and refined, the trade off being handling.
