You might hope it would, but you'd be wrong. I did LOADS of this in my 20's and got precisely nowhere with it. On one memorable occasion I double dated with a mate who was staying in the spare room and 2 women from his work, later that evening having done all the cooking I was lying in bed on my own listening to my pal shagging away on the other side of the wall. Great. Somebody not very far away is having a MUCH better time than you are.

I had a range of recipes and no shortage of women round to eat them, but very very rarely did I ever get more than a peck on the cheek and a "thank you for a lovely dinner".

I'm still a pretty handy cook, but it's not as effective as you'd hope. Nor are flash cars, sorry OP. A leased new Polo probably ticks more boxes for young women than some elderly waftmobile or indeed a sports car. Like I said, get a 3 series, or, if you can stand the boredom, an Audi.

How about a Barchetta? Looks the part, most people let alone impressionable young ladies will have no idea what it is, and the LHD novelty adding to that curiousness. Prices from £2-£5k and I would imagine fairly depreciation proof.

Most people will just think that's an MX 5.

Someing discreet - no big spoilers/large exhausts/gold wheels etc.

My suggestion would be a German hatchback/coupe. A mk1 TT would probably be top of my list.

Enough change to buy a cheap shed for when it breaks too

You cannot say I'd be wrong, this is about personal experience not absolutes,,, Definitely not wrong... Worked for me (obviously not every time).... It's possible you "did LOADS of this in my 20's and got precisely nowhere with it" because you're ugly/boring/smell/got a really small dick/crap cook/scary person/pervy... and a whole host of other things that women are simply turned off by... wink

Please please don't take that personally, it's not meant to be personal.... wink

I'm calling fantasist on this one.

24 years old, with £3k per month *spare* money?

Posting history is full of random 'What Car' posts, none of which display any kind of consistency with the others.

The 3k a month and buying a 5k car to 'impress girls' struck me as odd, too. I didn't realise he had a history of bogus what car threads!

nono It's an amusing thread with lots of good posts... why do you feel it necessary to pick on the OP?

I've always thought that spending money on nice trips (weekends away) gets you far more "bang" for your buck than any car. This thread smells so desperate of "pretending to be something I'm not".

Offer to take "her" (objectively speaking, anyone you are interested in/has similar interest back) to dinner in a top restaurant in Paris for a weekend, Madrid, Vienna, Lisbon, wherever - spend a lot less and get a lot more (experiences) and run a car you can afford. Sounds a lot more fun in your 20's than trying to maintain some clapped out chav mobile.

I think if I were to create a fantasy life, it would be a bit more exciting than the one I have now laugh it wasn't boasting about income either, it's not a massive amount of money these days and if you'd like to PM me if you're that curious I'll happily give you more details! it's not like having a decent chunk left after tax means I can go and spunk 30k on a nice car anyway so I don't see how that's bullst.

The garage has taken a bit of adjustment recently and not knowing what's going on with my relationship has thrown up some different options. I love any opportunity to get in to a different car. As it stands now, all I'm left with is my old beat up shed which really is on its last legs unfortunately, and an ancient BMW which has recently failed it's MOT as rust has pretty much killed it, I will get it back on the road, but again, not really for this situation.

Would quite like to get myself in to something respectable with a view to not turning up on dates in an old POS, nothing wrong with that!

I had no idea those merc CL's could be had for such little money. I suppose no one wants a huge petrol with massive potential to go wrong?

As an aside, I've been out in my colleagues 3 series this evening, I didn't drive it unfortunately as not insured, but it was nice. I think I'll try an Alfa out thiufh before getting carried away as the newer BMWs are a bit boring.

If I were you, get the nicest E46 you can, seriously solid cars with little room for huge bills anymore and they can look very nice with a classic design - look at 330ci

But in all seriousness, for flash to impress, trips with ridiculous hire cars are the best bet (went to Munich where you can hire pretty much any BMW by the hour, M's, etc) ;-)

I am a BMW man usually, never had an E46 though. There are lots of chav comments on here, personally I think a facelift 330ci in m sport trim is quite a handsome car.

Had a beat up old Mk1 MX5s for years and was a 50/50 split between girls adoring it or thinking it was a rusty deathtrap. Both entirely reasonable points of view.

Plenty of safe options so far in the form of tidy BMW's, A3's and other VAG stuff.

Boxster is a good shout, my mum and sister were astonished when they found out you could buy one for less than 20k second hand biggrin

My shout would be a classic, decent Triumph Spitfires can be had in your budget

£3,950.00

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Triumph-Spitfire-1500-Ex...

MG's, Triumph Stag maybe.

Depends what kind of girl your after, if it's hipsters, art students or actually girls who like cars (they do exist) you'll be sorted.

Another option is keep your shed, pay for a holiday to Thailand and bang your pecker to a stump.
