Daimler Dart.
If you do get a daimler dart be careful, I once broke the bootlid hinges when a young lady was hanging onto the bootlid in a dark car park while I was , shall we say behind her!!
I was thinking more of Phil Taylor wink

Get some camo waders and a 1995 Disco, 100% success rate, even if they say no.

Anything classic (pre 80's) it will be referred to as 'cute' and is a great conversation starter.

Or lease, either one end of the scale or the other, anything in between looks like you are trying to hard.

No one said I took anyone out? I said it was good for meeting girls and banging them. When you turn up at a pub or a house party in a Range Rover the girls definitely take a shine to you.

So you agree then. There'll be nothing 'clean or smart' about a 2001 S Class Merc or a Boxster of similar age. Women don't appreciate cars, but a car can say a lot about you. I imagine the sort of people suggesting an old S class are the sort of people who think wearing a Ralph Lauren shirt and a pair of jeans with a huge logo on the back pocket is a great outfit too. I.e very tragically trying to appear like they have money which is about as bad as it gets in personality traits.
Yes and no, I mean an S class could be a great waft wagon if it's a tidy one and wears it's miles well. Ultimately though it could be a money pit and it could looks utterly naff if it's shonky.

I drive a 2003 E320 as my day to day car, I'm not saying it's a flash motor but it's very tidy and very smart. I wouldn't have an issue picking up a lady chum in it as I think it's smart but not trying too hard.

Do people actually buy cars to impress women? I have no objection in someone driving an old Boxster, fun car I'm sure but not impressive.

Thing if if you spend £3k or £90k, it doesn't necessarily mean you won't look a like a muppet in the car if you're trying to impress other people in it.

Ah your in London, explains it. Up here it wasn't ever viewed as "old rape rover", get tons of positive comments and people asking wtf I do to afford it.

You can say what you like but as a 19 year old it worked wonders.

Ps: My first car was a mighty diesel focus...

Proper job mate!

I still have one excess cushion on the couch after the ex left 6 months ago, but it is very much functional, i always have it in the corner of the couch to lay on!

Will be taking down the scaffolding-wood decoration this week, and probably painting the brown (nono) wall some other colour as well.
I used to hate decorating but now it's only for myself I don't think it's going to be anywhere near as hateful. Plenty of free time to get cracking now too...

Yup, its amazing how much "decorating" turns out to be "taking stuff to the tip" when you go from having an SO to the bachelor pad..

Took the big ikea kallax 4x4 unit, threw out all the crotcheting books/yarn and replaced it with some model cars/lego as display pieces and job jobbed!. (and off course the 20+ paintings i took off various walls)

Driving something odd (like a Range Rover when you're 19) can either make you look like "that guy with that cool car" or "that weirdo". Whether you are perceived as an interesting individualist or just plain peculiar comes down to your personality and charisma. Same as any other affectation.

It's all subjective. Personally, I'd be embarrassed driving a 13 year old E Class and turning up to take a girl out. It just looks like you're trying too hard to appear rich.
Having said that, age matters. I'm 24, so would not look right me driving an old E Class. When I had a similar budget I was 21 and bought a MK 5 Golf 1.6 fsi, but it had decent alloys, 3 door and pretty nice interior compared to other cars of that age.

Range Rover actually really does sound good, it would be a lovely place to soak up the miles. Wasn't really aware even the L322 was in budget! The running costs aren't really what scares me, it's more the potential for breaking down. I might keep my old shed anyway just because it's worth feck all so it might help. Maybe if I bought one for 4K and spent a bit renewing things that are common failures before they occur?

I have quite a bit of disposable cash which is nice, fairly easy to save etc, the problem I have in getting something I really want is financing it. A £600 a month loan is nothing if I have 2.5-3k per month spare, but annoyingly a misunderstanding after I moved house 4 years ago with a mobile phone company means they've registered a default on my credit file, for a stupid amount too of about £50! I'm in the process of trying to get it removed, but if I can't then it's on there until 2018 which is really, really annoying. I've managed to get a credit card to improve things, I've been approved for leasing before, but a loan is a no go due to this silly default for 50 bloody quid.

So for now I think 5k Max would do, if I can find something smart enough.

A few other nice suggestions so far so thanks for that chaps. The Alfas really really appeal. Need to do a bit of research in to the reliability as some say it's a myth they're all hideously unreliable and others say it's completely true! I do like the GT like the one posted, but I'd love a fully sorted 156, not sure they have the same allure for the ladies though!

I'm differing on opinion with the boxster, where they haven't changed *that* much over the years I reckon a sorted one would still look good!

Well, for what it's worth, I've had nothing but positive reactions to my recently acquired Type R (EP3 - breadvan) from females ranging from early 30's to early 60's.
rofl Classy birds I assume. I have owned one and never had one positive reaction. Looks like a chav wagon/blinged up civic and thats what it is. (not saying I didn't love driving it like an utter chav!)
Ones mileage varies, in such matters.

I suspect a lot of the reaction comes down to the driver and how the car is driven.

In your case, I suspect that explains a lot ;-)

So you have £2.5-3k a month spare cash and you're looking at getting a shed to impress birds? Something doesn't sound right there.

I did say in that post why I can't finance something more lavish, and I'd sooner not save every single penny I earn for months to buy a car outright when it could be better invested elsewhere. Just because you have the money, doesn't mean it's all best spent on a car. Time to try and save some now I'm single too!

I'm not completely against leasing but most of the cars available seem pretty boring (and diesel) so not massively keen on renting a golf tdi when I could use that money to run an interesting older car which still looks good enough for the job.

The 5k could be stretched, but I was just curious to find out if the budget I have available now is enough to buy something decent enough. Seems it probably is actually.

Having plenty of disposable cash at the end of the month doesn't mean you can rush straight out and buy a new M5!

It does sound like you'd have no bother being able to keep a Range Rover running if that's what you want, although personally I'd want something a bit more fun to drive. Or maybe sell your shed and buy a Range Rover & an MX5 to go with it!

as shallow as it seems, if you are specifically looking to get your leg over and the car will be assisting in that aim; get a car that birds would like to drive themselves.

All of the below in white, obvs...
TT
SLK
1 series
Z3/4
and yes, MX5
or something a bit older and quirkier like an MG Midget/beetle
i think bigger cars like an old S class would be met with granddad comments

make sure that they are standard, women don't like to stand out from the crowd.

That's the psychology 101 sorted, lol...

Obviously the sole purpose of the car isn't to look good to girls, but I'm aware that I should upgrade my current POS with something more suitable with this firmly in mind. whatever I buy I have to like of course, but I like some hideous cars which would probably actively put people off!

lol, that's a good list and I agree with your thinking! Not sold on the MX5 though...
