I have never used Enterprise, and now I probably will not. Just for the ballache that it sounds like to rent from them

Had a car from Europcar a few weeks ago. Went in with license, credit card and DVLA code. Drove away 5-10 minutes later including checking the car over and signing forms.
I still find Enterprise the best to deal with. Good availability and competitively priced, they will also collect you from home.

I suspect the profiling is to reduce risk, the scrotes will soon get the message and look elsewhere.

Not suggesting you are a scrote wink

Data collection, all the franchises are getting into it. Few trips to Halfords recently I've been asked if I want my receipt emailed to me... WTAF!!!

Tell them you're the feet manager for the company, see if you get an upgrade.

I've used my local Enterprise quite a few times and have always found them very goid to deal with. I guess it varies depending on which branch you go to.
I've also noticed Halfords offering to email my receipt- seems every business earns more from data harvesting than its actual core products!

I own the company. The fact my company is based not more than 300 yards from their office made it even more strange.

I had this with enterprise a couple of weeks ago, which I reserved online and upon collecting, I was asked my employers details etc. Also asked me for a second contact number, I said I only have my mobile no land-line but insisted on a second contact number be it a family member or friends number.

It really annoyed me and their response was they are lending me A £30k car (was only £20k Mazda 3) with only a £200 deposit and another member of staff said if it had a recall..I hired the car for 2 days.

Also, tried to charge me for Sat nav even though it as built in.
A similar thing with me a few years ago. Was hiring a Focus or similar to head to Yorkshire with my Dad (75) and my wife for a long weekend. Got there, they had nothing available despite my booking but said quite proudly they'd got me an upgrade ready instead. Cue the lad pointing at a Renault Megane Cabriolet. Now the back seats and luggage space in those is non-existant and it was a very wet Autumn at the time, so first where was my Dad going to sit, where was our luggage going to go and why would I want a stbox convertible at that time of year.
After much arguing they eventually 'did me a favour' and got me a Saab 93 estate, though not after firstly having tried to charge me a fortune for the 'upgrade', and secondly driving me 15 mile to collect it from the house of the chap who was due to give it back after a 2 week rental - so it hadn't been cleaned or prepped. Never again!
Europcar on the other hand have been very good in the past.

What would have happened if you had refused to answer those questions? Wouldn't they have let you have the car?

I refused and he said he could not let me have the car unless I answered. I am not a push over but I had no option other than to answer as I was collecting my new car 12 hours later - hence the reason for hiring their POS "20 grand" Hyundai!

So much complete tosh in this thread, it's almost funny.

They won't sell your details, they aren't credit checking you, they aren't looking for bonus payments, they aren't anything.

If you meet certain criteria (it varies by area), you are asked certain extra questions. It's nothing more than risk management.

The sure and certain way to avoid the 'cash-qual' is to pay by credit card.

I had the misfortune of working for the named company for a year. This was never policy when I worked there unless arranging cars for insurance purposes, where the information may have been used to a mitigate a like-for-like rental. Another poster indicated that it may be due to the attempt to sign corporate customers; this may be the case, but the branches I worked in did not operate it this way. This said, it was five years ago.

I will never rent a car from this company out of choice, having worked there.

Where were you hiring, broadly (but not too bloody broadly)?

I paid no attention at the time but now that you mention it. Enterprise have in the past required an employer name and contact number when I've hired in the past. I just took it as a 'we need a place to find you if things go wrong' deal and didn't think anything of it.

If they asked me if I owned my home etc...that would be none of their business!

North West.
I can understand some @rse covering but what my personal business such as the status of my home ownership has to do with them I have no idea. If I was a tourist or visiting from another country god knows what they would do then. And yes there are plenty of bad boys and gangsters around, but they don't use Enterprise I can promise you that.

The "gentleman" behind the counter was inferring I would not return the car and then the would have to come and "look for me". I can understand if they were hiring me a 488 or 911 but it their "20 grand" car was a bog basic Hyundai that probably cost them £12k tops. Surely they have insurance?! (maybe not!)

Nope, self insured in the main, big enough to cope with the averaging out over the fleet.

It matters to Enterprise for the same reason it matters to insurance companies. Statistics show that a certain demographic, as defined by characteristics which are permitted in law to be considered, are more likely to be higher risk renters.

Let me assure you (from a position of greater knowledge, I would venture) that bad boys can, will and do use rental vehicles.

The credit card thing is out of the ordinary.

By cash-qualing you, the chap behind the counter was no more suggesting that you'd nick the car than by charging you a premium your insurers suggest you will crash your car. It's a sensible practicality which helps reduce costs and, in turn, makes the owners wealthier and I'm some cases makes your rental cheaper.

I went into a posh jewellers a while back. I had to ring a bell and wait to be let in after a once over from a large man with an earpiece. He wasn't suggesting I was a scallywag, he was taking a precaution because he knows how judgement is imperfect. No offence meant nor taken.

In short, it's nothing personal, don't take it as such.

I would beg to differ, From experience based on people I have encountered your low level cannabis dealers will be the ones smoking round in Merc/BMW/Audi's. The real big nasty boys love nothing more than a Skoda Octavia or Hyundai i30 to blend in with joe public.

I think SLR was suggesting they don't rent from Enterprise rather than them not driving certain cars.

Never had anything like this with them before. They provided me a courtesy car when mine was in for repairs (non fault accident), when that got written off (again non-fault) they provided me with an even nicer replacement!

No funny business, weird questions etc. I've dealt with hire car companies a few times before, to be fair Enterprise have been the best one so far.

Correct.
