How about going modern classic? A 205 CTi, mk1 golf cab or e30 cab should fit. All are good for engine conversions if that's your bag and you'll possibility make money on any of them.
Think the E30 will be too long for the garage.944 S2 cabrio just about fits though

Tough criteria. Not much is that short, and stuff that short and RWD is rare. If you're willing to compromise on RWD, you might have more choice.
Classics are all well and good, but that's hard to go for when you have children in the back and you want modern crash structures. Might a Mini Convertible (R57) appeal?
