But then people like that aren't really enthusiasts are they?
We may be going a touch off topic here, but I agree 100%. There's a big difference between the people I know who claim to like cars but really just like big flashy expensive objects to show off with, and the true car enthusiasts.True car enthusiast come in many forms, everything from drag-racing power fanatics, through to vintage enthusiasts, but the thing that marks them all out is that they care more about what THEY think of the cars, than what other people think of them.

This.
I'm over 25, and have mine in yellow, with the stickers (though at least they're silver so a bit more subtle than on the Trophy-R), and have been really surprised by the number of positive comments I've had on the car (mostly from random strangers). I'd assumed that no-one other than proper petrolheads would bat an eyelid, but it seems that having a car in a bright colour means lots of people like it.

Glad I dont give a st what people think else I'd be driving a 3 series or similar 'ive done well for myself' car. id also be dead inside everytime I got in it. I know because I have been there.

Oh Lord..........
My perfect car with this in mind would have a cup chassis with some toys as options. Are 18's better for road use whilst we're at it?
Having driven many permutations of the Megane III were I in the position to buy one I'd consider the following. My perfect car with this in mind would have a cup chassis with some toys as options. Are 18's better for road use whilst we're at it?
Must have:
- Cup chassis/diff
- Recaros
- The black 'Tibor' 18s (much nicer on the road, less minging and not as kerb hungry as the 19s)
Nice to have:
- Ohlins
- Akrapovic
- Speedline 19s (the Turinis, not the regular ones)
Beyond that I personally wouldn't get too hung up on the various versions, limited editions or rebadges. So long as it has those fundamentals you're basically onto a winner.
Cheers,
Dan

I keep coming back to these in the classifieds - spec wise I was also confused but the posts in here have gone some way to helping.
What would concern me is values sliding - are there any editions that it's reasonable to think will depreciate really slowly? I'd love a facelift variant, but value wise I always end up looking at GP Mini's.
An R26R or Trophy-R would be a good substitute for one of the GPs I'd think. I wish this attitude would just die in a fire; who cares what people that you don't care about care about?! It's not like your friends and family will disown you for driving one or that complete strangers will suddenly love you because you drive something else like a keeping up withe Jones' German soft roader.
Yep, and most other people don't care anyway. They're too busy on their phonesnickfrog said:

I may (quite conceivably) be wrong, but will they not always be a niche product when few people over 25 can own one without looking a bit silly, and few people under 25 can afford to buy, run and insure one at these now lofty prices?
I had always thought that these were bought by the few and rich as second cars to enjoy at the weekends and track days, hence the low mileages you often see them advertised with.
They don't all come in yellow - my Cup is totally anodyne I would have thought. They are £10k second hand and make for a very good daily driver too. I have really loved Renault colours in the past, especially Alien Green, Racing Blue & Storm Grey... but the current line up just doesn't have anything *really* nice imo!

Maybe they might value brand "lifestyle", mpg, emissions, and luggage space less than they value performance, handling, enjoyment, or that intangible joy of course.
i had a 197cup 2008-12 , then test drove a 250 in 2011.
i ended up in a new 200 cup , but should have got a 265 and spent the extra.
alot more car , and miles quicker.
there is so much choice now for this kind of car , if i was in the market i would not know what to get!
worked out ok in the end though , 2 cars now , SEAT MII & Boxster spyder981.
first time i am hot-hatch-less in 25 years!

Right. Done some digging. The 250 became the 265 in 2012 and then the major facelift (literally a new front end) of the car (which was in its 265 state at the time) came in 2014. So you can get a 265 with a different front end from another 265. Also, to correct the list above, for the facelifted 265, Renault dropped having two separate cars (Cup and non-Cup) and just had a single car which you could add the Cup pack to or not. So, same difference really. (So this makes 4 types of 265 in total - 265 Trophy, pre facelift 265 non-Cup, pre facelift 265 Cup, and facelifted 265 "RS" as it was officially called.)
I agree with what Dan said - Cup pack, Recaros are "essential". Other than the power, the size of the wheels and the fancy options (Akra exhaust, Ohlins), there is very little difference between the 250, 265 and 275 from a mechanical point of view. Think of the 265 as a 250 with power pack and a 275 as a 250 with power pack plus.
As for values, it is a Renault, so unfortunately, second hand values are not great for owners. Great for buyers though. I think that a well maintained 275 Trophy (maybe) and 275 Trophy R (most likely) with low mileage and with the best boxes ticked will be worth a bit in a few years time, but not right now.

I can agree with everything you've said.
I've got a facelift 265, with the cup chassis, which has the LSD.
Leather Recaros
I had the Tibors, but I've just upgraded to the Speedline turini's. A note, they're rocking horse st rare though!
If you want to get one, money object its the 275 Trophy.
Alternatively, I'd look at the Cup S or the nag, which can have the cup chassis optioned at the factory.
Then any Cup'd car. I daily mine, and it's fine. It's no Lexus, but when you point it at some corners it comes alive.
Going from 18' PS2 equipped car to 19' continental tyred car I've not noticed any ride difference either.
The Speedlines look s lot better!
The ohlins are worth looking at retrofitting, but are hugely expensive, the Akrapovic not so much, as a mid box chop does broadly the same for less than £100.
Brilliant cars, and as others have said get a lot of positive comments. Even my black one gets lots of mostly positive attention which is a huge surprise.
Just to add a cradle to the grave I'm now 41 and have had my 250 ff from new, it's now 6 years old and has 100k
On the clock the only reason I have not changed it yet is because nothing has come along as a worthy replacement
I was looking at a new focus rs but then I test drove one last month and that put pay to that idea
So it will have to come down to what Pierre punts out with the Meg 4 rs but it will have to be manual or I won't be interested

Afaik they can be retrofitted to other 275 and I would say the same with the older ones but with how they did the clio mk3 I couldn't say for sure.
With regards to the recaros stealing back space. The only complainer I've had is my brother, who is a larger guy, when I had 3 adults in the back. They still had plenty of space but he couldn't put his feet as forward because of how low the recaro is (I also sit with it as low as it'll go as I prefer that to drive) as he could in my mother's Audi BUT my mother's Audi can't fit 3 adults in the back so there's also that.
The r link is the sat nav/media/rs monitor (at least version 2 which is what the 275 comes equipped with if specced)

Yes but your talking near on £1300 each damper from Renault or £1500 from a seller in Poland for all 4 if he has any left
Then you will have to still buy springs which are about £300 each,I decided to not bother in the end I have managed fine with the stock set up, so have decided to put the money towards the cars replacement when ever that will be come on Pierre were is no4
