Pretty sure he was taking the pee.
I don't think 1360kg is 'too heavy'. The CS's weight is about right for it's size and configuration and a useful 100+kg lighter than the R.
Personally I would not want a road car that resorts to plastic wings and windows, A/C deletion, natty bucket seats and cheaper interior materials etc to save weight.
If lightweight were a deciding factor on car choice, it wouldn't be a generic hatchback to begin with would it?
not too heavy for a car that needs to conduct general duties as you say. but too heavy for a really enjoyable spirited drive compared to mx5 or older french hatchbacks even if they had less power.I don't think 1360kg is 'too heavy'. but it's a shame the engineers aren't let loose to produce an 1150kg hatchback. the market would be too small i know, but it would be an interesting addition. They could do it and it would be better than the past, but beancounters understandably say no.

If serious it's 1272kg for the manual. Tiny bit more for the DSG which imo as an owner is a little heavy.
Great car though. Shame PH keeps deleting my thread.

absolute rubbish how can you compare this to a civic Type R which has 4 seats and cheaper
ill tell you what ill take the rear seats out spend the extra 3k on amd chip and exhaust and get 400bhp
see how the club S fairs then oooo and i can buy one today aswell thats useful most of these cars wont be drivers just garaged and polished everyday to hold there value
pointless of VW making this car apart from a quick buck and i wonder if you actually get the right parts underneath being as VW are going though a tierA supplier problem ?? might get a rusty turbo from a GTI and spinn it up to the max in the software lol
cheer stu ..

As for it being pointless VW making this car, there will be many who will disagree.
Once you start ripping the back seats out of a hot hatch you may as well go mad like Renault and either; A: Put an engine there, or B: Fill the space with a roll cage and fit plastic windows. I'm sure it's amazing to drive, but it doesn't have that mini GT3 RS appeal that the old R26.R had. It doesn't seem special enough to justify the compromise. A fully optioned Clubsport would be more tempting.

Why add 60+kg to the kerb weight by adding a cageCABC said:

Indeed, compared to older cars, these cars already have a full tank and driver weight included in the given weight (usually, always much confusion here). Given the safety equipment, the power (i.e. twice that of the GTI's of old, has to weigh something) and the actual larger size, this one is actually relatively light...And I think the difference with the Golf R is larger, the weight in the stats in the vid is wrong if I am not mistaken and is the kerb weight without driver for the R...

All weights in the vid table are EU with 75kg driver/luggage and fluids and for a three-door manual for direct comparison purposes - 1,360kg is the weight by that measure for the Clubsport S making a like-for-like R +116kg. DSG (where applicable) adds 20kg to GTI and 19kg to the R and it's +30kg for a five-door over a three-door. So any given DSG five-door is at least +50kg or so over a three-door manual. Lightest GTI or R you can actually buy is the non-GTI Performance plain vanilla three-door manual GTI at 1,351kg by the same measure - 9kg less than the Clubsport S!And I think the difference with the Golf R is larger, the weight in the stats in the vid is wrong if I am not mistaken and is the kerb weight without driver for the R...
Cheers,
Dan

The Clubsport and S look great to me. Bit of a shame the usual VW discounts aren't available on them. Zero in fact.
I was in the right place at the right time, got a cracking deal through my leasing company (they also finance cars privately for you to buy on PCP) if you hunt around you can get 5% off the RRP.Dandanfings said:

Noted! I'll pop into VW and see what I can haggle. Going via DTD or Broadspeed shows nothing. Very glad you got one though. What spec did you get?
try carwow, most dealers aren't budging but 2 did!My spec is:
Recaro seats
5 doors
DSG
Discover Pro nav
app fingy mirrors my phone to the display
rear camera
no adjustable suspension as installing bilstein
no sunroof
standard 18" wheels
Cant understand peoples logic in specing the Pretorias as they are heavy, the standard 18" wheel is forged and ultra light, its specially designed for the car.
DSG does not make the car less engaging, in fact since the introduction of that gearbox on the MK5 I have found it to make it better car and more fun to drive then the manual... faster too.
Doesnt arrive until the very end of the year

this true - std wheels are forged yet there's a paid option for heavier cast 19"?how very sad.
anyway, yr spec looks great.

So what sort of differences are there between this and a Cupra 290? Does it have different springs/dampers, more aggressive diff set up, quicker rack, geometry change..... anything?
Seems to me that a cupra 290 with their not quite as good bucket seats and the sub 8 pack so it benefits from better brakes than the clubsport S is just as good a proposition. Granted, it won't hold value but it does make the Clubsport S seem not that special.
I completely agree, if it's not massively faster than the Cupra Sub8 then the only thing 'special' about it as far as I can see is it's a two seater. Not sure why VW have bothered other than as an excersise.Seems to me that a cupra 290 with their not quite as good bucket seats and the sub 8 pack so it benefits from better brakes than the clubsport S is just as good a proposition.
