Many years ago I was travelling down the A46 in my Impreza Type-R. As I approached a roundabout there was a Gallardo (my dream car) at the junction on the left indicating right. As I went past, I gave him a smile and a thumbs up. So, instead of turning right, he turned left to follow me and on the next straight gave it the full monty going past me. What a noise. He then went 180 round the next roundabout to resume his journey and gave me a smile and a wave as he went. Top bloke.
As a supercar owner I think you almost have a duty to do such things thumbup

And I'm in the GT-R is chavvy camp too, definitely not my dream.

The GT-R isnt my dream (not a jap car kind of guy), but i have huge respect for it as a car, and i would very much love to drive one for a bit.

And id damn sure buy one of these before considering a 911 for instance

Fair enough mate and to be fair I'd take any of the cars you mention over the GTR.

I do personally think they are chavvy but if I liked it enough I wouldn't care less if it was as I'd be grinning like a loon on every drive. Sadly, I'm just no into them particularly and that's the main reason I wouldn't own one. Remember I own a Twingo 133 so image is certainly not the first thing when it comes to car purchases haha.

Also, you can get one for around £40k so looking at cars in that price bracket there's a number of cars that although not as high performing, I would probably pick over the GTR.
IF I'm being honest, I think I'd only have a GTR if I was seriously wealthy. I think for the £40k mark I'd take an M3 or something like that as opposed to a leggy GTR. I'd only really want one to 'try it out' for a couple of months rather than actually own and drive every day.

That's fair enough if you don't like the car, I just got the impression some people did actually like the GTR but wouldn't buy one due to someone else thinking they are a chav which I just find bizarre!

Well if its aimed largely at me then you got the impression wrong.

I think the car is impressive. I do think its chavvy. Is the latter enough to stop me buying one? No.

What stops me buying one is other factors. Size (width mainly), non-linear power, too heavy, too synthetic. Etc etc. I like purer cars.

The fact that I think its chavvy (especially with that plate) and the factors that mean I wouldn't buy one are separated from each other.

Mind you, I would place a 911 Turbo in some of those camps too..GT Porsche only for me please.

I did have similar thoughts albeit not quite as brutal as that but in my mind I do deem the GTR as a bit chavvy.

I'm not saying it's entirely chav, it is an epic car in many ways but it's a poster car for a lot of people who love modified Subarus and Evos, it's that step up from those kinds of cars. Again they're not all chav, I have a friend who has a track focussed Impreza and is a partner at a law firm but there is still quite a chav following.

I wouldn't say the GTR is a classy car but then again cars that are dream cars to me may not be seen as classy to others. smile
Agree with the above but I don't know why. Every time I see one the same thought goes through my mind as to how they're a fantastic piece of engineering and they'll embarrass many a more expensive car. Surely the cool guy is the one who buys a Nissan purely for it's performance over a badge. But if I was in the market for that type of car I probably wouldn't buy one. Yet I loath brand snobbery.

The GTR always confuses me.

Apparently there are a bunch of guys on the GTR forum who are trying to re-badge their cars.

With this...

I don't like illegal number plates. I'm not a zealot, but it's just one of those things that will have traffic police forming a negative opinion of the driver. The sort of thing that can be the difference between a finger wag and a speeding ticket.

Putting that aside though, it's not my dream car and probably wouldn't feature in my Euromillions collection. I admire the car as an engineering exercise greatly.

The styling doesn't do anything for me, and I prefer my cars to rely far more on me. Whilst I like a good hard shove in the back a lot, I also like to have it only when I've worked for it.

I'd agree, I don't think the running costs of a £40k GTR are in the realms of the running costs of other fast cars in that price bracket.

The perceived image of the GTR isn't enough to put me off, it's just one of a few reasons I prefer other cars. I'm not that snobby, unlike some haha.

I flip flop between a GTR and a Conti cab (I know very different cars for very different things) as my purchase next year ... The thought of the GTRs speed is awesome but I don't think I could use it safely (never mind legally) whereas the Conti is sublime and perfect for sunny days and wafting

I'm torn and totally understand your dilemma ... I quite like the plate to
I had a GT Speed. They're quicker than a GTR off the mark. If you want fast then the Bentley won't disappoint. Might not go round corners quite so well mind.

I hate these tacky number plates that people put on nice cars. It just ruins them. Isn't the spacing on this illegal aswell?

The R35 GTR is definitely a dream car. You can get a decent enough used example of the earlier models fairly cheaply now so you could soon turn dream into reality. The main issue would be servicing it and keeping it on the road. So what may seem like a bargain super car soon gets shot out of the water when reality hits.

I think anyone who likes cars would probably say that if they won the lottery then this would be a definite contender on a "to-buy" list.

Is this thread not sufficient evidence to suggest that this isn't the case?

One thing it also shows is that the GTR seems to polarize opinion. Perhaps the most marmite car out there.

Not everyone aspires to a GTR, lottery win or otherwise. The mixed results of this thread display that.

It's quite simple.

Seems like a fairly obvious statement of fact to me, not something to laugh at.

FWIW, the GTR leaves me utterly cold. I really could not give a flying toss about it, and it certainly wouldn't be anywhere near a fantasy lottery-win garage. It's just blingy techno-wk.

I do like plates, but that one made me 'reach for the popcorn!' A big no no on PH, the car is stunning and a formidable opponent to the superbikes! I've got a busa and I'd think twice before taking on one of those. Love the GTRs.

It's top trumps ability is a bit more than bling techno-wk.

I wouldn't mind one, it's better than anything on my drive today. They're not even lottery money either.
