Ford Mustang outsells Audi TT!

Initial launch excitement sees Mustang top sales charts in the UK. 70 per cent are V8 too...

The Ford Mustang is a niche performance car choice, meaning any sales records it will set are going to be pretty niche too. So, yes, the Mustang is outselling the Audi TT - and any Porsche sports car you wish to mention, in fact - but in the arena of 'sports cars with 250hp or more'. No doubt those diesel TT cabrios keep the overall figure higher for the Audi.

Surely UK owners have to do this
Surely UK owners have to do this
Still, a record is a record, and Ford deserves credit for it. So far in 2016, 2,317 Mustangs have been registered in the UK, which places it nearly 1,000 registrations ahead of the second-place Jaguar F-Type (1,446). Also included in the top 10 are the Mercedes SL (489), BMW 6 Series (1,315) plus both four- and six-cylinder versions of the Boxster and Cayman (482 Boxster 718s, 526 Boxsters, 787 Caymans). The figure for TTs over 250hp is 778.

It would seem logical for the initial (and seemingly insatiable) demand to wane once the Mustang aficionados have their cars because, let's face it, the Mustang is hardly a rational sports car choice. Still, it's nice to see Ford's decision to create a right-hand drive Mustang vindicated. And isn't it nice to see something different on UK roads? Best of all, 70 per cent of customers over here are opting for the V8. Good work!

Should you wish to order a Mustang in the UK now, the latest cars come with the Sync 3 infotainment and three new colours - Grabber Blue, Lightning Blue and White Platinum. Given the Mustang still seems to be coveted, it could make it to the end of 2016 as the UK's most popular sports coupe. Which would be quite something. Finally, if you do want one but can't wait, there are already a few cropping up in the PH classifieds. Blue looks good...

I don't think I'd call it a sports car choice at all - it's a muscle car not a sports car.

Hurrah! Good news for the used market too, another few years they'll be creeping down nicely into sensible money.

Not rational because it officially does 20mpg, is still quite big in the UK and something like a TT (dare I say it) probably covers more bases.

And yes, agree on the muscle car categorisation, but that would give Ford less scope for showing off!

This is good news in the context of producers of similar cars wanting to do a RHD version of their other cars .

I'm hoping these sell well enough for there to be a plentiful used market in a few years. It's the only current car which interests me!

Fiesta ST, Focus RS, Mustang and the GT. Ford really on top of their game atm.

Ah, really?

Just sold mine after 5 months. Couldn't cope with that awfull steering. Not a bad car, but not really that exciting either.

Probably just opened the bonnet to look at the V8. Or listen to it.

Saw one the other day when filling with fuel. Sounded lovely.

A work colleague is getting his next week so will be interested to see it and hopefully get a ride out in it. Seen it already at the dealers and it does look great.

I would be very tempted myself if I had the spare cash at the moment but a new house has put the brakes on cars for the moment!

I honestly can't think of anything the TT does better as a sporty type of car, other than "be German" which admittedly seems to be the primary criteria for many British car buyers suffering from a maturity complex.

I4 or V8? Your profile doesn't mention a Mustang amongst the mountain of goldsmile

It's a pony car, not a muscle car wink

I'm really glad to see there's an appetite for these cars in the UK. Proves to the market that people really are sick of a uniform, beige tide of german diesels and little petrol turbos. Vive La Revolution!

I wonder how many are manuals...?

I'm kinda wondering how long it'll be until ads appear where the wky little 4-pot is being sold as "the rare and sought after" engine

Strange definitions of "Sports Car" going on here! A 6 series should not be competing with a Mustang and Audi TT!

Good on the Mustang I would expect a jump next April for the 'stang as well as it is good performance for the £'s necessary (with the £40K band requirement).

+1 thumbup

Preferably one in yellow for me, just like the one in the item - perfect. cloud9

And well done to Ford for having the bottle to finally sort a RHD version - glad it's paid off.

More than 400bhp for £35K? How much more sensible do you want?!

Agreed; a few of us are sick to the back teeth at the sight of yet more VAG-ste clones.

There is a guy down our lane with a RAM pick-up. It's almost as wide as the lane and he has to stop at every oncoming vehicle, being LHD. But it still makes me smile every time it burbles past. Even stupider than a 'Stang, but just as much fun!

Now if only they could put such an anti-eco-weenie engine in some sort of low-volume British roadster..?

Just priced a V8 up on the Ford.co.uk website. V8, manual, convertible, all the options £40,875.

Still a good price, but it isn't a £30K car.
