Islamic fundamentalism/ natural disasters
Discussion
I have been pondering how the human psyche deals with the aftermath of these events.
That of the 10 people drowning of our coast and the considerable loss of life in the earthquake in Italy against the loss of life when Islamic fundamentalists strike a deadly blow.
In the first two events we mourn the loss of life and basically shrug our shoulders and get on with our lives.
With the other, this forum would be filled with posts, the media would give banner headlines, our democracy might be compromised by calls for intrusive sanctions into our daily lives.
Please give me your thoughts on this subject and why we react so differently.

There's not much man can do to stop natural disasters. There is a lot we can do to stop terrorist attacks.
Not true.Where are the banner headlines screaming ...." EVERYBODY MUST WEAR LIFEJACKETS WHEN SWIMMIMG "
Or " ALL BUILDINGS IN EARTHQUAKE ZONES MUST HAVE SOUND FOUNDATIONS ".

Any rebuilt now may well have better foundations than before, but rebuilding every house that is in an earthquake zone "just incase" is hardly practical or economic.

Media frenzy, one sells paper one doesn't. That of the 10 people drowning of our coast and the considerable loss of life in the earthquake in Italy against the loss of life when Islamic fundamentalists strike a deadly blow.

Few weeks ago there was a article about flood in Macedonia killing 20 people. The same day one person died from terrorist attack. No mention of flood victims on these pages, and about 10 pages on terror attacks. If you look on these very pages, you'll see some people religiously (!) scanning internet to find any pages for anything that could possibly be attributed to terrorism. Even where police release statements saying it's nothing to do with terrorism you still have people (using that term broadly) going 'ah but maybe they are hiding something'. Sad state of affairs all around.
People just have a terrible sense of proportion. Look at the lengths people will go to to avoid buying a 5p carrier bag.
I guess we're just not equipped to deal with the relentless bombardment of news and emotions that modern communications give us, so we have to prioritise or we'd go nuts. Our instinct will be to look to those we relate to.

It's just the way the brain is wired. Terrorism is overexposed, poor diet is underexposed. Crashes in Ferraris are overexposed, DIY accidents are underexposed.
The worst is that the people best equipped to understand all of this are the very ones trying to sell us papers or get into power, when they should be teaching us how to see through this crap.
